aoc aims to get out the vote by streaming among us with pokimane and hasanabi

With a pandemic ongoing for approximately seven months and a presidential election just two weeks away, unexpected events have become commonplace. Therefore, it’s fitting for 2020 that Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is preparing to broadcast a live game session of Among Us, the year’s breakout gaming sensation, on Twitch, alongside prominent streamer pokimane and political commentator HasanAbi.

Yesterday, Ocasio-Cortez announced on Twitter that she was seeking individuals to join her in playing the widely-known game as a means of encouraging voter participation, mentioning her lack of prior experience but expressing her enthusiasm for the game.

Pokimane, a Twitch personality with a following of 6 million and regularly exceeding 1 million views per YouTube video, responded to the announcement with a gesture of willingness.

HasanAbi, a well-known political analyst on Twitch with over 380,000 Twitter followers, also joined the discussion, stating that preparations for a game lobby were already underway. Shortly after, Representative Ilhan Omar also indicated her interest in participating.

A typical Among Us game (which combines the elements of a simple multiplayer video game with a murder mystery scenario) generally requires ten players, leaving six spots still open. However, The Verge reports that several other streamers, including DrLupo, Felicia Day, Greg Miller, James Charles, and Neekolul, have also expressed their intention to play with Ocasio-Cortez.

Ocasio-Cortez has stated that the purpose of the stream is to promote voter turnout. This is not the first instance of her utilizing video games to engage with her audience; in May, AOC made herself available via direct message to all 6.8 million of her followers, accepting invitations to visit their in-game islands.

Voters from the Millennial and Generation Z demographics generally favor the Biden / Harris campaign, and Ocasio-Cortez is directly reaching out to them by appearing on Twitch and streaming a highly popular game.

The stream is scheduled to begin at 9pm ET/6pm PT and can be accessed here.

You can verify your voter registration status here.

Update 9:01pm ET: Even before the game commenced, AOC had attracted nearly 250,000 simultaneous viewers.
