Joby Aviation Saudi Arabia: Potential Distributor Emerges

Joby Aviation and Abdul Latif Jameel Reach Distribution Agreement
Joby Aviation has established a preliminary agreement with Abdul Latif Jameel (ALJ), a Saudi Arabian investment firm and conglomerate, for the potential distribution of up to 200 electric aircraft. The estimated value of this arrangement is approximately $1 billion over the coming years.
Accelerating Market Entry in Saudi Arabia
This prospective partnership offers Joby a streamlined pathway to generating revenue from its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles within the Saudi Arabian market.
Strategic Distributor Partnerships
Paul Sciarra, executive chairman of Joby’s board and co-founder of Pinterest, emphasized the importance of distributor partnerships. He stated that direct sales, coupled with strategic collaborations, can facilitate quicker scaling at a reduced cost, particularly when targeting specific geographic regions.
Memorandum of Understanding Signed
On Tuesday, both companies formalized their intentions by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU). While an MoU doesn’t represent a finalized agreement, sources indicate that more definitive details will be disclosed later this year.
A First for eVTOL Distribution
This potential deal marks one of the initial instances of an eVTOL startup securing a distributor partner for its aircraft. Joby intends to operate its own fleet in the U.S. and other locations, alongside collaborations with airlines and carriers, such as in Japan.
Leveraging Existing Relationships
Sciarra highlighted ALJ as an ideal partner due to its longstanding relationship with Toyota. ALJ has been the exclusive distributor of Toyota vehicles in Saudi Arabia since 1955, becoming a leading global distributor for both Toyota and Lexus.
Infrastructure and Support Capabilities
ALJ also participated in Joby’s 2020 Series C funding round, led by Toyota. Beyond their shared investment, Sciarra noted ALJ’s established infrastructure for sales, support, pilot training, and maintenance.
Ensuring Long-Term Success
He explained that this infrastructure is crucial for ensuring not only successful sales but also sustained success over the long term.
Government and Customer Connections
As an 80-year-old diversified business network, ALJ maintains close ties with the Saudi Arabian government and potential customers. This includes major projects focused on restoration and tourism, like the Red Sea Project and the AlUla Project.
Launch Plans and Market Expansion
Despite this promising partnership, Joby’s initial market launch remains scheduled for Dubai next year, followed by entry into the U.S. market.
Deepening the Sales Funnel
Sciarra explained that this collaboration demonstrates a strategy to broaden the sales funnel beyond initial target markets. Utilizing local partners to facilitate sales and support will enable Joby to access geographies that may not be prioritized initially, but can be monetized more rapidly.
Broader US-Saudi Cooperation
Joby’s agreement with ALJ coincides with increased collaboration between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia in areas like artificial intelligence (AI), technology infrastructure, and energy. Recently, DataVolt, a Saudi Arabian firm, committed $20 billion to AI data centers and energy infrastructure within the U.S.
Significant Investment Pledges
Furthermore, American technology companies, including Google, Oracle, Salesforce, AMD, and Uber, have collectively pledged $80 billion towards transformative technologies in both countries, as reported by the White House.
