Land Rover's Electrification Plans and the New Range Rover

Land Rover has announced intentions to incorporate a fully electric Range Rover into its vehicle offerings, with a projected release date in 2024.

Next-Generation Range Rover Details

This declaration coincided with the unveiling of the 2022 Range Rover, representing the fifth generation redesign of the luxury SUV. The new model boasts advanced technology and a sophisticated electrical architecture designed to facilitate over-the-air software updates.

The vehicle is built upon a new, adaptable platform that will serve as the foundation for future Land Rover models, encompassing both plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions.

Anticipated Electric Vehicle

While specific details regarding the upcoming electric variant remain limited, industry observers familiar with its parent company, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), anticipated this development.

JLR previously stated in 2017 that all new vehicles across both the Jaguar and Land Rover brands would include either an electric or hybrid powertrain option starting in 2020.

Hybrid Options for 2022 and 2023

The 2022 Range Rover will be available in a mild hybrid configuration. Furthermore, a plug-in hybrid version of the new Range Rover is scheduled for release in 2023, as confirmed by Land Rover.

The extended-range plug-in hybrid, arriving in 2023, will combine an inline six-cylinder engine with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, a 105 kW electric motor, and a 38.2 kWh lithium-ion battery offering a usable capacity of 31.8 kWh.

This powertrain combination is projected to deliver up to 62 miles of all-electric driving range and generate a total of 434 horsepower.

2022 Range Rover Variants and Pricing

The 2022 Range Rover will be offered in a diverse range of configurations, including standard and long wheelbase body styles, six- and eight-cylinder engine options, and various seating arrangements.

The entry point to the lineup is the Range Rover P400 SE, a mild hybrid model featuring a 3.0L turbocharged engine producing 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Its base price is $104,000, excluding taxes and the $1,350 destination charge.

The 2022 Range Rover range culminates with the P530 First Edition, a long wheelbase variant equipped with a 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 engine delivering 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, priced at $163,500, not including taxes and fees.

Advanced Technology Integration

Key technological features of the 2022 Range Rover include a new electrical vehicle architecture, internally designated EVA 2.0. This architecture enables wireless communication with over 70 electronic modules within the vehicle, according to Land Rover.

This capability will allow Land Rover to introduce new features and enhance existing functionalities through software updates to the vehicle’s infotainment system.

Such features are increasingly vital for automakers aiming to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving technology landscape.

Voice Assistant and Smartphone Integration

The 2022 Range Rover will integrate Amazon Alexa as its standard voice assistant, providing access to news, calendar information, vehicle control, and smart home device connectivity.

Furthermore, both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be available, mirroring smartphone interfaces and functionalities on the vehicle’s central display screen.
