Amazon Expands Mobile Game Streaming with GameOn

While mobile gaming hasn't previously experienced the same level of demand for streamed content as desktop platforms, Amazon recognizes a potential market for growth. The company is aiming to broaden Twitch’s leading position by extending its reach into the mobile space.

Following its initial release on Android in November, Amazon’s mobile-focused streaming application is now available on Apple’s App Store.

GameOn App Features

The application enables users to capture brief gameplay clips, ranging in length from 30 seconds to 5 minutes, from games that support screen recording functionality. These recordings are directly integrated into the GameOn library.

Within the library, users have the ability to enhance their clips with voiceovers or further editing before publishing them to the GameOn platform. Alternatively, links to the content can be shared across other online platforms.

A Separate Platform

Notably, GameOn operates as a completely independent entity from Twitch, featuring distinct branding and separate channels. Amazon is actively collaborating with streamers to concentrate on mobile gaming and promote challenges exclusive to the app.

The service currently boasts compatibility with over 1,000 different mobile games.

The trend of developers creating more comprehensive mobile ports of desktop games is increasing. However, the absence of advanced control schemes presents an ongoing obstacle.

As gaming companies explore bringing cloud streaming services to iOS, the demand for content specifically created on mobile devices – and games playable with gamepads – may rise. This will largely depend on future changes to the App Store’s policies.
