Amazon Book Sale vs. Independent Bookstore Day

Amazon's Book Sale Timing Draws Criticism
Amazon is facing scrutiny regarding the scheduling of its major book sale in 2025, which is set to run from April 23rd to April 28th. This timeframe places the sale in direct competition with Independent Bookstore Day.
Independent Bookstore Day and its Significance
As highlighted by Maris Kreizman in Literary Hub, Independent Bookstore Day is a yearly event spearheaded by the American Booksellers Association (ABA). The event features special happenings, guest appearances, and exclusive items at over 1,600 bookstores nationwide.
This year’s celebration is currently taking place, on April 26th.
Kreizman strongly encourages support for local independent bookstores, stating the importance of visiting them whenever possible.
The State of Independent Bookstores
Recent data from the ABA suggests a positive trend for independent bookstores within the United States.
However, Amazon continues to hold a dominant position in the book market.
A 2020 report from a House committee estimated Amazon’s control over more than 50% of both the online and physical print book market, with an even greater share of the e-book sector.
Perception of Amazon's Actions
The timing of Amazon’s sale, coinciding with a nationwide event celebrating bookstores, is viewed negatively by many.
Bookshop.org, a competitor to Amazon that collaborates with independent bookstores, communicated with its customers via email.
CEO Andy Hunter characterized Amazon’s sale as a deliberate strategy by a company that has contributed to the closure of numerous bookstores and currently commands over 60% of the market.
Statements from Key Figures
Hunter expressed strong disapproval, stating that those responsible for scheduling the sale at Amazon should feel remorse, but appear to lack it.
Amazon responded with a statement claiming the overlap in dates was “unintentional,” attributing it to the need to accommodate participation from additional countries.
Allison Hill, CEO of the ABA, conveyed to Vulture that, at a minimum, the timing is insensitive and, at worst, a deliberate attempt to undermine small businesses.
Further Considerations
Considering Amazon’s vast size, it is plausible that Independent Bookstore Day did not receive significant attention during the sale scheduling process.
Nevertheless, the timing has sparked considerable debate and criticism within the bookselling community.
