Amazon Echo Buds: A Second Generation Update

Approximately eighteen months have passed since Amazon initially launched the Echo Buds. A review was conducted upon their release, and the assessment was, at best, unremarkable. They presented as somewhat budget-conscious, encountering significant competition within the wireless earbud market.

However, as a first iteration into this product category, they were not entirely unsuccessful. Now, Amazon is introducing a revised version, incorporating refinements to the original design. A key improvement is a redesign that reduces the size by 20% and lowers the overall weight.

Enhanced Comfort and Durability

The ear nozzle has been minimized, potentially enhancing comfort during extended use. Four different ear tip sizes are included to ensure a secure and personalized fit. Furthermore, the earbuds boast an IPX4 rating, providing resistance against sweat and various weather conditions.

Amazon has transitioned away from the previous generation’s Bose noise cancellation technology, opting instead for its own proprietary noise reduction system. The company claims this new technology effectively doubles the noise cancellation performance of the first version.

Charging and Availability

An optional charging case is available, supporting wireless charging via the Qi standard, similar to Apple’s AirPods. The aesthetic of the white case bears a notable resemblance to its competitor.

This wireless charging case adds $20 to the $120 price of the standard USB-C case. Currently, Amazon is offering a promotional discount, reducing the standard case to $100 and the wireless charging version to $120. A six-month subscription to both Amazon Music Unlimited and Audible Plus is also included with purchase.

The new Echo Buds are offered in a white color option and are available for preorder today. Shipping is scheduled to commence in May.

Software Enhancements

Upcoming software updates will introduce a new VIP Filter feature to the earbuds. Initially featured on the Echo Frames, this function allows users to selectively filter notifications based on the sender.

Beyond Alexa integration, the earbuds can also be configured to access Siri or Google Assistant, providing users with voice assistant flexibility.
