Amazon Launches $60 Smart Thermostat - Affordable Home Automation

Amazon Introduces New Smart Thermostat
Today marked the beginning of Amazon’s major hardware event with the unveiling of a new smart thermostat. The company collaborated with both Honeywell and Resideo in the device’s creation. However, Amazon will be applying its own branding, distinct from its other smart home subsidiaries like Ring or Blink.
Pricing and Rebates
The thermostat is priced at $60. Amazon anticipates that a significant number of customers will qualify for substantial rebates through participating programs, potentially lowering the purchase price even further.
Seamless Integration with Amazon Ecosystem
The device is designed for minimal user configuration. It leverages the existing Amazon and Alexa smart home infrastructure. The Energy Star certified thermostat utilizes a “Hunch” feature to automatically adjust temperatures based on occupancy and routines.
Further control is available through connected Amazon devices, allowing for direct adjustments as needed.
Compatibility and Competition
Amazon states that the new smart thermostat will function with the majority of 24V HVAC systems. This launch positions Amazon as a competitor to Google’s Nest thermostat line. However, the new Amazon offering is significantly more affordable, costing just $60 compared to Nest’s $200 price point.
Simplified Design
Amazon prioritized simplicity in the thermostat’s design. It features a large, clear temperature display, and intuitive arrow touch buttons. More advanced functionality is accessed through connected Echo devices.
