Amazon Prime Day 2024 Dates Confirmed: June 21-22

Amazon Announces Prime Day 2021 Dates
Amazon has officially announced that its annual Prime Day sales event will take place on Monday, June 21st and Tuesday, June 22nd. These dates were previously reported by Bloomberg, based on information from leaked documents.
Shift from Traditional Timing
Historically, the major sale event was held in July, during a typically slower period for retail. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a delay to October in most regions, including the United States, during the previous year.
Success for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses
Despite the altered schedule, Amazon reported that small and midsize businesses achieved over $3.5 billion in sales during last year’s Prime Day. This represents a 60% increase compared to the prior year’s event. Total Prime Day sales figures were not disclosed by the company.
Early Promotions for Small Businesses
This year, Amazon is initiating early promotions to support small businesses. From June 7th until the start of Prime Day, Prime members who spend $10 on products from participating small businesses will receive a $10 credit for use during the main event.
Geographic Availability of the Promotion
This offer will be available in several key markets, including the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Japan. Amazon states this is the largest promotion in its history specifically designed to benefit small businesses, with over 300,000 selling partners participating.
The Original Intent of Prime Day
Prime Day was initially created to encourage more Amazon customers to subscribe to Amazon Prime. This was achieved by offering substantial discounts across various product categories, including Amazon’s own devices like Echo smart speakers and Fire TV devices, which consistently rank as top sellers.
Continued Discounts and Expanded Services
This strategy will continue, with Amazon promising savings on items in categories such as home goods, electronics, beauty products, fashion, and Amazon devices. Sales will also extend to other Amazon services, including Prime Video, Amazon Music, and Prime Gaming.
Amazon Music Unlimited Offer
Currently, Prime members can take advantage of a four-month free trial of Amazon Music Unlimited, which provides access to up to 70 million songs. The service recently added lossless streaming as a complimentary upgrade, mirroring a similar move by Apple Music.
Focus on Small Businesses Amidst Scrutiny
Since its inception in 2015, Amazon has increasingly emphasized its support for small businesses during Prime Day. This shift comes amidst growing regulatory scrutiny and antitrust investigations concerning its business practices.
Antitrust Concerns and Legal Challenges
Amazon has faced Congressional hearings, including testimony from founder Jeff Bezos. Additionally, the District of Columbia’s Attorney General, Karl Racine, filed an antitrust lawsuit against Amazon, alleging that the retailer restricts competition by controlling third-party sellers. The suit claims Amazon artificially inflates prices by preventing sellers from offering lower prices elsewhere.
International Investigations
The company is also under antitrust investigation in the European Union. Accusations include leveraging non-public data from third-party sellers to copy popular products and undercut their prices.
Positive Messaging and Seller Testimonials
During a press briefing, Amazon utilized actress Kristen Bell (“The Good Place”) to highlight the success of small businesses on its platform. Bell “interviewed” sellers like Pawstruck and Live by Being, who shared positive experiences with Amazon.
Amazon Live and Influencer Support
Bell, alongside Karamo Brown and Mindy Kaling, will also feature favorite sellers on Amazon’s video shopping service, Amazon Live.
New Tools and Services for Sellers
Amazon reported delivering over 250 new tools and services last year to assist its selling partners in reaching 300 million customers worldwide.
Seller Performance Statistics
Keri Cusick, head of Small Business Empowerment at Amazon, stated that U.S. small and medium-sized selling partners sold over 3.7 billion products in the past year, averaging more than 7,200 products sold per minute. These sellers averaged $200,000 in sales, an increase from $150,000, and over 27,000 American sellers exceeded $500,000 in sales.
Upcoming Deals and Early Access
Amazon has not revealed specific details about upcoming Prime Day deals, but confirmed participation from brands like Le Creuset, Tommy Hilfiger, Lego, Mattel, and Black & Decker.
Alexa Integration
Alexa device owners can begin shopping early, starting June 18th, by asking, “Alexa, what are my deals?”
Availability Across Platforms
Prime Day will be accessible on Amazon.com and regional websites, Amazon.com/espanol for Spanish speakers, and in Amazon’s physical retail locations.
