OpenSky Drone App Launches in the US - Alphabet's Wing

Drone Airspace Access Simplified with Wing’s OpenSky App
Personal drone testing is an enjoyable departure from typical product reviews. However, conducting these tests in my usual location has become unfeasible. The challenges of flying in Queens, New York – with its high population, proximity to major airports, and a correctional facility – combined with increasingly strict regulations, have made local operation impractical.
Navigating Complex Airspace Regulations
Identifying accessible airspace can be particularly difficult within densely populated urban environments like New York City. To address this, Alphabet’s drone delivery division, Wing, has announced the U.S. release of its OpenSky application. It is now available for download on both the Google Play Store and the iOS App Store.
Initially launched in Australia in 2019, the app caters to both recreational and professional drone pilots. Its development benefited from collaboration with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).
FAA Collaboration and LAANC Integration
The U.S. iteration of OpenSky was developed in consultation with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). It is specifically designed for use within Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) airspaces.
This application enables drone pilots to efficiently request and receive authorization for operations in controlled airspace. This process, which historically could take days or even weeks, is now significantly expedited.
Wing’s Vision for Safe and Expanded Drone Use
Wing poses the question: “Why would a drone delivery service invest in an app for all drone operators?” The answer, according to a recent blog post, lies in the need for widespread regulatory adherence.
With almost two million registered drones currently in the United States, ensuring compliance across the board is crucial for safe airspace integration. This, in turn, will unlock the full potential of drone technology.
- Expanding applications like emergency response.
- Facilitating commercial inspections.
- Enabling contactless delivery services.
These benefits can be extended to a broader population through increased compliance.
Availability
The OpenSky app is accessible to users throughout the United States, starting today.
