Encrypt/Decrypt Files: Add to Windows 7/Vista Right-Click Menu

Enhancing File Security with Right-Click Encryption in Windows 7 & Vista
Users of Windows 7 or Vista employing the integrated file encryption feature may find it advantageous to incorporate a dedicated option within the right-click context menu. This streamlines the encryption and decryption process, bypassing the need to navigate through file properties.
Implementing the Right-Click Encryption Option
The implementation of this feature is remarkably straightforward, requiring the modification of a single registry key. Begin by launching the Registry Editor, regedit.exe, via the Start menu search function.
Navigate to the following registry key path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
Within the right-hand pane of the Registry Editor, a new 32-bit DWORD value must be created. Name this value EncryptionContextMenu and assign it a value of 1.
Following this adjustment, a new "Encrypt" option will appear when right-clicking on any file.

Encryption Scope Selection
Selecting the "Encrypt" option will prompt a dialog box. This allows you to choose whether to encrypt only the selected file, or to extend the encryption to the encompassing parent folder.
The dialog also provides the ability to designate the file-only encryption as the default behavior.

Visual Confirmation and Decryption
Upon successful encryption, the file's title will change to a green color. This serves as a clear visual indicator that the file has been secured.
The right-click option will dynamically update, transforming from "Encrypt" to "Decrypt" for encrypted files.

This modification offers a significantly more convenient method for managing file encryption. It raises the question of why such functionality wasn't included as a standard feature from the outset.
A downloadable registry hack, AddEncryptionMenu.zip, is available for those who prefer a simplified implementation.
