This program functions as a personal time tracking service, meticulously recording computer usage.

RescueTime Dashboard Overview

The Mac Data Collector icon is located in your menu bar, providing quick access to the Dashboard within your RescueTime account. This Dashboard presents a comprehensive view of your computer usage.

It details your activity patterns, highlighting periods of peak and low productivity. Furthermore, an “Efficiency Summary” is provided, quantifying the proportion of time spent on productive versus distracting activities.

Categorization of Activities

All computer activities are systematically categorized. Examples include E-mail, Design/Composition, News/Opinion, Business, Entertainment, Reference, and other relevant classifications.

These categories allow for a detailed analysis of how your time is allocated across different types of tasks.

Time Reports

More granular data can be accessed through the Dashboard reports, providing detailed insights into specific categories.

These reports cover productivity metrics, individual activities, and personal objectives.

Furthermore, analysis is provided regarding your peak and low efficiency periods throughout the day.

Report Details

The reports offer a comprehensive breakdown of how time is allocated.

This allows you to classify activities as “very productive,” “very distracting,” or somewhere along that spectrum.

For instance, I’ve configured RescueTime to consistently report my time on MakeUseOf as “very productive.” Conversely, activities like working within TextEdit and Dragon Dictate are assigned a +2 productivity score. However, time spent on Yahoo! Messenger or TweetDeck is categorized as a “distraction,” despite providing a welcome break from focused work.

Certain activities can be designated as “neutral,” meaning they neither contribute to nor detract from your overall productivity efficiency rating.

Furthermore, you have the ability to manage and personalize the assigned categories, precisely defining the tasks you are undertaking when using specific applications or visiting particular websites.

Within the Activities page, you can also choose to delete individual activity entries. Alternatively, you can instruct RescueTime to completely disregard a monitored website or application. As an example, I’ve set RescueTime to ignore Facebook – which it defaults to labeling as a “distraction” – as it is used by my daughter, not myself. The delete/ignore option appears only when you hover your mouse over the activity’s listed time.

The Lite version of RescueTime offers substantial and valuable insights into your computer usage patterns. However, the Pro version provides detailed activity reports, including specifics on documents, webpages, and chat windows. It also incorporates features for tracking offline time, receiving alerts related to your productivity goals, and blocking distracting websites. My initial week with RescueTime has led me to consider a Pro subscription to refine my time management strategies.

RescueTime shares similarities with Slife.com, a previously popular time tracking service still installed on my Mac. However, Slife.com appears to lack ongoing development and doesn’t offer the same level of detailed reporting as RescueTime.
