Acast+ Launches: Enhanced Support for Paid Podcasts

Acast Launches Acast+ Subscription Suite

Following a partnership established last year with Patreon to facilitate support for exclusive podcasts, Acast has unveiled a comprehensive collection of subscription tools known as Acast+.

Expanding Paid Podcast Options

The company has previously conducted trials with paywalled podcasts outside of Patreon. However, Acast+ represents its most extensive offering to date. Podcasters utilizing Acast’s advertising services will gain the ability to introduce diverse paid options to their audience.

These options include ad-free listening experiences, access to exclusive episodes, and prioritized access to new content releases.

Universal Accessibility for Listeners

Listeners will be able to enjoy this premium content through their preferred podcast players, encompassing platforms like Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts.

Acast’s Revenue Model

In return for providing these tools, Acast will receive a portion of the generated subscription revenue. Matt MacDonald, Vice President of Product, clarified this as being integrated “as part of the overall package of using Acast.”

This arrangement benefits podcasters by centralizing their monetization management within the Acast platform. They can upload and control access to all content—both paid and free—from a unified system.

Furthermore, they will receive a complete overview of their earnings, encompassing both advertising revenue and subscription income.

Focus on Open Access

MacDonald emphasized the importance of supporting subscription access across various podcast players, rather than developing a proprietary listening application.

“This is a really clear distinction,” he stated. “Our goal is to ensure that a podcaster’s audience remains their own. We are simply providing a financial instrument to help them strengthen their connection with the listeners who support their show.”

Creator Control and Patreon Integration

Acast co-founder Johan Billgren highlighted the customization options available to podcasters, including the ability to define subscription tier names and subscriber designations.

He also confirmed that Acast will continue to collaborate with Patreon following the launch of Acast+.

“Our priority is to offer creators the widest range of choices,” Billgren explained. “They are responsible for their audience relationships, and if Patreon is the optimal solution for them, we want to empower them to use it.”

More broadly, Billgren suggested that Acast+ signifies “a significant change” as podcasts evolve from being “entirely free and reliant on advertising” to embracing a more diverse set of business strategies.

Strengthening Creator-Listener Bonds

“The financial aspect is a reflection of the overall relationship,” MacDonald added. (The theme of listener relationship-building was also central to Acast’s recent acquisition of RadioPublic.)

However, the financial component is undeniably crucial: “I have frequently heard podcasters express that even a modest increase in revenue could enable them to produce another episode. We are providing them with the financial means to achieve this.”

Beta Testing and Sign-Ups

Acast+ is currently undergoing beta testing and is accepting registrations from interested podcasters.
