Google Opens First Retail Store in NYC

Numerous temporary pop-up shops have preceded this moment, but Google’s inaugural permanent store is set to launch tomorrow in New York City’s Chelsea district. This move positions Google alongside industry counterparts like Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, and Amazon, all of whom maintain a retail presence in Manhattan.

Store Details and Location

The new retail space, opening at 10 a.m. local time, encompasses 5,000 square feet. This location represents a significant investment in Google’s West Side real estate holdings. Previously, the premises were occupied by a Post Office and a Starbucks, both of which vacated the property following the expiration of their leases.

Focus on Hardware and Customer Experience

A key objective is to provide hands-on access to products like Pixel phones, Home devices, Stadia, WearOS, and the recently integrated Fitbit devices for both tourists and local residents.

According to Jason Rosenthal, VP at Google, the company leveraged insights gained from previous pop-up shops spanning 2016-2019. These learnings were instrumental in shaping the design and functionality of the Chelsea store.

The preview event was conducted virtually due to ongoing pandemic restrictions. However, the store will adhere to standard safety protocols as New York City continues to navigate the later stages of the pandemic.

Preparation and Staff Training

While the pandemic likely caused delays, Google assures a full operational launch starting tomorrow. Weeks of piloting preceded the opening, allowing the store’s approximately 50 employees to undergo comprehensive training.

Prior to the Chelsea location, Google constructed a full-scale store mockup in a Mountain View hangar to refine the customer experience and test various concepts.

The store incorporates interactive “sandboxes” designed to simulate real-world environments, similar to those found in furniture stores, but with enhanced lighting. A dedicated gaming area will allow customers to experience Stadia, and a soundproof space will be available for testing Home/Nest products.

Following the model of Apple Stores, the location will offer repair services for Pixel devices. Google intends to expand the range of on-site repairs, with certain issues, such as screen replacements, potentially completed on the same day.

Future Expansion Plans

This store is likely a test case for potential expansion. Google may consider opening additional locations across the U.S. and internationally, in markets where its hardware is sold. However, the company is currently focusing on the Chelsea store’s launch and is not disclosing further plans at this time.
