5 Text Reader Apps to Speed Read Effectively

A Skeptic's Look at Speed Reading Applications

Historically, I’ve considered speed reading programs and software akin to dubious late-night advertisements and questionable investment opportunities. Therefore, encountering a complimentary text reading application claiming to enhance reading speed immediately piqued my curiosity.

My investigation led me to identify five of the most credible text speed reader applications currently available. These applications function by addressing the natural way the human eye processes text. Typically, our minds scan sentences horizontally, requiring focus, processing, and comprehension before moving to the subsequent word or phrase.

The core promise of these specialized apps is the elimination of the need for constant refocusing during reading. Previously, MakeUseOf has reviewed several speed reading applications. Speed Reader shares similarities with the tools I will detail, though it isn't quite as sophisticated.

We’ve also recently examined Quickreader for the iPhone platform.

Exploring Five Cutting-Edge Speed Reading Tools

Below is an examination of five recent speed reading text readers designed to dramatically increase your reading velocity.

  • These applications aim to streamline the reading process.
  • They focus on minimizing the cognitive effort required to track text.
  • The goal is to allow for faster comprehension and information absorption.

Speed reading techniques, facilitated by these apps, can potentially unlock significant improvements in reading efficiency.

The underlying principle involves presenting text in a manner that reduces the need for saccadic eye movements, thereby accelerating the reading experience.

Exploring Two Web-Based Text Readers

This article will examine two initial tools that function as online applications utilizing Flash technology. Flash-Reading, a complimentary service, is provided by the website "Speed Reading is Real." For testing purposes, content from a recent post detailing MUO discoveries by Aibek was utilized.

Upon selecting "Continue," the application begins presenting the text in segmented portions. Users have the ability to customize the reading speed, measured in words per minute, the size of each segment, and the font size. This is not only a beneficial method for initiating speed reading practice, but also proves useful for individuals who encounter difficulty reading smaller text sizes online.

The tool demonstrated effective functionality, and a noticeable increase in reading speed was observed compared to typical reading habits.

Another online application can be found at Spreeder. This free version serves as a demonstration of the software’s capabilities, intended to encourage users to purchase the desktop edition.

Similar to Flash-Reader, clicking "spreed!" immediately initiates the presentation of text, displaying words individually. The initial speed is set to 300 words per minute. For those unfamiliar with this reading technique, this pace may initially appear exceptionally rapid.

It is possible to adapt to this speed, however, initial adjustments to the settings were necessary. Customization options include word count, chunk size (defined in words), window size, font size, and color scheme.

The comprehensive settings available in this online application position it as a leader in its category. Features such as variable speed settings, which allocate more screen time to longer phrases and accelerate shorter ones, are included.

Furthermore, subtle pauses at the conclusion of sentences contribute to a more natural and intuitive reading experience.

Three Desktop Text Readers

When considering desktop applications designed to enhance reading speed, one program immediately stands out as a personal favorite. Dictator is a sophisticated text speed-reading application, offering a comprehensive feature set typically reserved for paid software.

Users have the ability to adjust the displayed text into word groupings of any desired size and control the reading pace. Multiple viewing options are available, including both full-screen and split-screen modes.

Navigation through the text can be achieved using the arrow keys for manual control, or the spacebar can initiate a flowing reading experience based on the words-per-minute setting. A key differentiator of this application is its ability to dynamically adjust reading pauses.

Shorter pauses are implemented for concise phrases and individual words, while more substantial pauses are naturally integrated where grammatical structure dictates. This results in a remarkably fluid and intuitive reading experience.

For optimal concentration and maximized speed, switching to full-screen mode is recommended. Trying this software is highly encouraged. Many users are surprised to discover they can process text at two to three times their usual speed, while maintaining complete comprehension.

Another noteworthy application is simply named Speed-Reader. It appears to have originated as a student project, yet its quality and functionality are remarkably advanced, rivaling those of Dictator.

All settings are conveniently accessible from the main interface. Text can be directly pasted into the application or loaded from a text file. Furthermore, the color scheme and font sizes are fully customizable, enhancing user experience.

The third application, RAM 4 (currently unavailable), was developed by Claude Pavur from Saint Louis University. It is described by its creator as a “Tachistoscope”.

This program employs a similar methodology to the others, but presents text line by line rather than word by word. The timing of each line is determined by its length and word count. However, this approach was found to be less effective in improving reading speed and potentially hinders the mind’s ability to focus on a single point.

Nevertheless, if a text reader that provides contextual awareness of words within a sentence is preferred, this option may be more suitable than the alternatives.

Have you had any experience with these speed reading applications? What are your thoughts? Are you aware of any other free text speed-reading apps that offer comparable functionality? Please share your insights and recommendations in the comments section below.
