10 Free Microsoft Apps You'll Actually Love

Microsoft's Surprisingly Useful Free Tools

Typically, Microsoft isn't the first name that comes to mind when considering free and appealing software. Google currently leads in this area, offering services like Gmail, Google Reader, Calendar, and Google Docs, among many others. However, a selection of genuinely valuable free tools are available from Microsoft, some already released and others still in development.

Featured Free Microsoft Applications

(1) HealthVault

This service is particularly beneficial for many families in the United States. HealthVault functions as a secure online repository for all your medical records. It facilitates not only the storage of medical history but also the sharing of information with healthcare professionals, and provides a platform for faxing and automatically archiving medical documents.

(2) Windows Live (Office Suite)

Microsoft’s long-anticipated online office suite is now available. While numerous online office solutions exist, concerns about compatibility often arise. Will documents open correctly? Will formatting be preserved? Microsoft is uniquely positioned to guarantee full compatibility with the Microsoft Office suite. You can register for notification upon launch. (Update: Reports suggest this may evolve into a document storage and sharing service rather than a full online office suite.)

(3) TellMe

TellMe provides a cost-effective alternative to premium 411 directory assistance services. It allows for the rapid retrieval of contact information and directions to local businesses, such as repair shops, pizzerias, and restaurants. Access is available via a toll-free number, text message, or the TellMe mobile application.

(4) Windows Live (Safety Scanner)

This is an online center for maintaining and checking the health of your Windows system. It includes features for virus scanning and removal, hard drive space recovery, and performance optimization. A limitation is that it requires Internet Explorer for access and is not compatible with Firefox.

(5) Tafiti

Are you in need of a robust research tool? Tafiti integrates multiple search engines, visual search capabilities, webpage sharing, and other features designed to streamline online research. While compatible with any browser, it requires the installation of Microsoft Silverlight (available for free).

Free Microsoft Software Utilities

(6) Win XP Powertoys

PowerToys is a collection of small, versatile applications designed to enhance your Windows experience. The current package includes 15 different programs, such as an 'Alt+Tab' replacement, a comprehensive unit converter, a right-click image resizer, and a virtual desktop manager.

(7) FolderShare

This program is simple, memory-efficient, and packed with useful features. FolderShare enables remote access to your PC, file sharing with others, and file synchronization across multiple computers and mobile devices. It’s a valuable addition to your software toolkit.

(8) Sysinternals Suite

This suite bundles over 60 troubleshooting utilities into a single package. Many of the included applications are geared towards technical users and may require specialized knowledge. However, some apps offer full automation, such as PageDefrag, an excellent paging-file defragmenter.

(9) ConferenceXP

ConferenceXP is a live screen sharing and collaboration application for groups. Key features include local screen streaming, browser-based screen sharing, and a live collaboration sketchboard.

(10) Windows Live Pack

This package brings Windows Live services directly to your desktop. A notable feature is the ability to select which specific services you wish to install. The package includes Family Safety, a web photo gallery, online storage, the Windows Live Writer blogging tool, and more.
