Zuddl Raises $13M to Simplify Virtual Events

The Future of Events: A Shift Towards Virtual and Hybrid Models
The return of large, in-person events is inevitable. Indeed, indications suggest a move in that direction, as evidenced by recent iterations of events like CES.
However, the widespread adoption of virtual events has presented both advantages and challenges. While offering the potential for expansive reach and eliminating travel burdens, the technical complexities and the difficulty of replicating the engagement of physical events remain significant hurdles.
Zuddl: Simplifying the Virtual Event Experience
Recognizing the enduring relevance of virtual and hybrid events, Zuddl, a platform dedicated to virtual event hosting, has secured $13.35 million in Series A funding. This investment aims to streamline the process of hosting, customizing, and enhancing the engagement of these events.
Zuddl’s primary focus extends beyond large public trade shows. The company has observed considerable traction in assisting substantial organizations – including Microsoft, Kellogg’s, and HSBC – with their internal events. These encompass job fairs, training initiatives, and inter-departmental networking opportunities.
According to co-founder Bharath Varma, the expenditure on internal events within Fortune 1000 companies often rivals that of external events, attributable to the scale of their global teams.
Customization and Flexibility at the Core
Acknowledging the diverse needs of different organizations and teams, Zuddl is designed with adaptability in mind. Users can configure the virtual environment to their specifications, selecting the number of stages – from one to five – and tailoring the color scheme and branding.
The platform allows for the creation of customized virtual venues, complete with backgrounds and interactive hotspots, simulating the atmosphere of a physical location. Templates are provided, but organizations can upload their own imagery to replicate conference centers, concert halls, or even their own offices.
Streamlined Live Stage Management
Zuddl simplifies the complexities of managing live stages. Hosts can invite guests to a private “backstage” area for pre-event communication, A/V checks, and technical support, all within the browser.
The platform facilitates a seamless transition between backstage and the live stage, and includes features to address technical issues such as internet connectivity or audio problems. A dedicated chat function enables backstage hosts to communicate discreetly with speakers, addressing issues like muted microphones.
Furthermore, Zuddl offers functionalities like session recording, stage timers, and integration with ticketing systems.
Enhancing Attendee Engagement
The platform prioritizes the attendee experience, allowing participation in smaller, private roundtable discussions while maintaining a view of the main stage.
A robust Q&A and polling system is integrated, with the option to invite audience members onto the stage after vetting their video and audio quality. A speed networking feature facilitates rapid-fire video conversations with preset durations, and an optional gamification system encourages event exploration.
Simplifying Complex Technology
Despite the apparent simplicity of virtual events, a significant amount of underlying technology is required for their successful execution. Zuddl appears to effectively address many of the common pain points associated with these events.
Investment and Team Growth
This funding round was spearheaded by Alpha Wave and Qualcomm Ventures, with participation from GrowX Ventures, Waveform Ventures, and various angel investors. Zuddl was also a participant in Y Combinator’s S20 program.
Currently, Zuddl comprises a team of approximately 70 individuals. The company previously secured a $2 million seed round in October 2020.
