Zoom CEO Eric Yuan on AI and the Future of Work

The Potential for a Shorter Workweek Through AI
Eric Yuan, the founder and CEO of Zoom, posits that artificial intelligence assistants will ultimately facilitate a reduction in the standard workweek. During his presentation at the TechCrunch Disrupt 2025 conference on Monday, Yuan elaborated on Zoom’s integration of AI technologies.
Zoom's AI-Powered Features
A key component of this integration is a “digital twin” functionality, enabling an AI avatar to represent and speak on your behalf. Yuan himself utilized his AI avatar during an investor earnings call earlier this year, showcasing the technology’s capabilities.
He highlighted the technology’s capacity to redefine the parameters of communication. Yuan also revealed that a significant portion of his time is now dedicated to discussions surrounding AI and the development of appropriate products.
Strategic Investment in AI
When questioned regarding his investment priorities, Yuan stated unequivocally, “AI, AI, and AI.” The potential for AI to fundamentally alter the nature of work is a central focus for Zoom, prompting extensive strategy sessions.
Expanding Use Cases for AI Companions
Yuan envisions numerous applications for AI companions extending beyond simply substituting for individuals in video conferences. He presented a scenario involving two executives negotiating a contract via Zoom.
Rather than engaging in a prolonged call, their digital twins could initially collaborate on drafting a preliminary agreement, as suggested by Yuan. This would streamline the process and improve efficiency.
AI Assistance with Daily Tasks
Furthermore, Yuan discussed the potential for AI to manage email communications. The technology could filter messages, identifying those requiring immediate attention and prioritizing responses.
AI is also expected to augment Zoom’s existing suite of tools, including features like online whiteboards and collaborative documents. Currently, Yuan manually oversees these products to complete tasks.
A Future of Reduced Working Hours
“Eventually, AI will help,” Yuan affirmed. He believes that the implementation of AI will ultimately allow for a shorter workweek.
“By doing that, we do not need to work five days a week anymore, right? … Five years out, three days or four days [a week]. That’s a goal,” Yuan concluded, outlining a vision for a more balanced future of work.
