Zoom Expands AI Companion Availability to Web and Free Users

Today marks the launch of Zoom’s AI assistant to the wider web, integrated as part of the AI Companion 3.0 release. Notably, access to the assistant’s capabilities is now being extended to free users, albeit with certain limitations.

AI Companion Features for Basic Users

Users on the basic plan will be granted access to the AI Companion within a limit of three meetings per month. Each of these meetings will benefit from features like automated meeting summaries, intelligent in-meeting question answering, and AI-powered note-taking.

Furthermore, basic users can pose up to 20 questions via the side panel and the newly introduced web interface. An optional $10 add-on plan is also available for those seeking unrestricted access to the AI Companion features.

Enhanced Web Interface and Prompting

The newly designed web surface incorporates conversation starter prompts. These prompts are intended to educate users regarding the full scope of the assistant’s functionalities.

Integration with Third-Party Services

The AI assistant now possesses the ability to retrieve information not only from data stored within Zoom itself, but also from external platforms such as Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive. Future updates will include connectivity to Gmail and Microsoft Outlook.

A new feature generates a daily reflection report, consolidating meeting summaries, assigned tasks, and daily updates. The assistant can also automate the creation of follow-up tasks and even draft email communications.

Document Creation and Collaboration

The AI Companion update introduces enhanced document creation and management capabilities. Users can now draft and refine documents directly based on meeting content.

Projects can be initiated within the companion interface and seamlessly transitioned to Zoom Docs for collaborative editing. Document export is supported in multiple formats, including MD, PDF, Microsoft Word, and Zoom Docs.

Lijuan Qin, Head of AI Product at Zoom, emphasizes the company’s unique position as an independent entity. This independence, coupled with its access to contextual meeting data, provides a significant advantage over competitors in the productivity sector.

Zoom leverages a combination of proprietary models alongside those developed by OpenAI and Anthropic.

Competition in the Productivity Space

Founded by CEO Eric Yuan, Zoom gained prominence during the pandemic as a leading video conferencing platform. However, its expanding suite of productivity tools now places it in direct competition with established players like Google, Microsoft, ClickUp, and Notion.

Each of these companies is actively striving to gather more comprehensive user data, including insights derived from meetings.

Recent Developments

Earlier this year, Zoom unveiled a cross-application notetaker designed to function seamlessly across various meeting applications, as well as during offline sessions, further solidifying its position within the productivity landscape.
