Yukai Engineering's Cute Robot: A Nibbling Companion

A Novel Robotic Companion: The Amagami Ham Ham
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is well-known for showcasing innovative and sometimes unusual robotic creations. This year, Yukai Engineering, the company behind the popular Qoobo robotic cat tail pillow, has unveiled a unique device – a soft robot designed to gently nibble on a user’s fingertip.
The intention behind this creation is to provide a “somewhat pleasing sensation” intended to uplift one’s mood. Yukai Engineering aims to offer a novel experience through this interactive robot.
The "Hamgorithm" and Nibbling Patterns
Dubbed Amagami Ham Ham, the robot utilizes an algorithm, playfully named the “Hamgorithm,” to randomly select from a repertoire of two dozen distinct nibbling patterns. This ensures that each interaction delivers a unique and unpredictable tactile experience.
These patterns, including options like Tasting Ham, Massaging Ham, and Suction Ham, are meticulously crafted to mimic the gentle nibbling sensation often experienced with babies or pets.
Meaning and Design Inspiration
The name “Amagami” translates to “soft biting” in Japanese, while “ham” signifies “bite.” This linguistic choice directly reflects the robot’s core function.
The robot’s aesthetic is inspired by characters from Liv Heart Corporation’s Nemu Nemu stuffed animal series, resulting in an appealing and approachable design.
Two models will be available for selection: Yuzu, resembling a Calico Cat, and Kotaro, modeled after a Shiba Inu.
Addressing a Common Human Experience
According to Tsubasa Tominaga, CMO of Yukai Engineering and the robot’s inventor, the Amagami Ham Ham addresses a peculiar human inclination. He notes that many people enjoy the sensation of being gently nibbled on, but instinctively discourage it from children or pets due to the potential for stronger bites.
Tominaga explains that the robot offers a way to indulge in this “forbidden pleasure” without any risk of discomfort. It provides a safe and controlled outlet for this unusual preference.
Availability and Future Plans
While the final pricing remains to be determined, Yukai and Liv Heart are planning a crowdfunding campaign in the spring to bring the Amagami Ham Ham to market.
Attendees of CES will have the opportunity to experience the robot firsthand at the show, and potentially leave with a slightly more sensitive fingertip.
Bocco Emo: A Smart Medical Device
Beyond the Amagami Ham Ham, Yukai will also be showcasing Bocco Emo at CES. This represents an evolution of the original Bocco robot, now functioning as a sophisticated smart medical device.
Hospitals in Japan are currently utilizing Bocco Emo to monitor patients’ vital signs through connected sensors, such as pulse oximeters and thermometers. The robot can then alert nurses to any changes in a patient’s condition.
During a trial period, Bocco Emo was employed to keep patients’ families informed about their loved ones’ well-being. It also interacts with patients using sound effects, facial expressions, and gestures while they await medical attention.
