YouTube Shorts Adds Veo 2 for GenAI Video Creation

YouTube Shorts Integrates with Google’s Veo 2 for AI Video Creation

YouTube Shorts is now incorporating Google DeepMind’s advanced video model, Veo 2. This integration empowers content creators to produce AI-generated video segments for their short-form content.

Veo 2: A Response to OpenAI’s Sora

Veo 2 represents Google’s answer to Sora, the text-to-video generation technology developed by OpenAI. Previously, YouTube, under Google’s ownership, enabled creators to utilize AI backgrounds for their Shorts via the Dream Screen feature, activated through text prompts.

Now, Veo 2 will facilitate the creation of independent video clips. These clips can then be seamlessly integrated into any YouTube Short.

Enhanced Performance and Realism

According to a recent blog post from YouTube Director of Product, Dina Berrada, these new AI tools are designed to operate with increased speed.

Berrada explained that Veo 2 demonstrates a superior understanding of both real-world physics and the nuances of human movement. This results in more detailed and convincingly realistic video output.

Furthermore, users can specify particular styles, lens types, or cinematic effects. This makes Dream Screen a versatile and engaging tool for creative expression.

To ensure transparency, videos generated using these tools will be marked with a watermark from DeepMind’s SynthID. This tool is designed to identify AI-generated content.

YouTube has also confirmed that all AI-created videos will be clearly labeled as such. However, the platform acknowledges that these labels may not fully address the potential for misleading viewers with synthetic content.

How to Access Veo 2 in YouTube Shorts

Creators can access Veo 2 within YouTube Shorts by opening the Shorts camera. Then, they should select the Green Screen option and navigate to Dream Screen.

Within Dream Screen, a text prompt can be entered to initiate the generation of a video clip.

Availability and Future Expansion

This feature is launching on Thursday for creators located in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

YouTube intends to broaden access to Veo 2 in the future, extending its availability to a wider range of creators globally.
