YouTube Launches Likeness Detection for Creators

YouTube announced on Tuesday the official release of its likeness-detection technology to qualifying members of the YouTube Partner Program. This rollout follows a successful initial pilot program.

The new technology empowers creators to request the removal of AI-generated content that inappropriately utilizes their image or voice.

First Phase of Implementation

A YouTube spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that this represents the first stage of the broader implementation. Eligible creators began receiving notification emails this morning.

This detection system is specifically engineered to identify and manage AI-generated content that features a creator’s likeness, encompassing both facial features and vocal characteristics.

Protecting Creator Identity

The primary goal of this technology is to safeguard individuals from the misuse of their likeness. This includes preventing unauthorized endorsements of products or services and curbing the spread of misleading information.

Recent instances of AI likeness misuse have highlighted the need for such tools. For example, Elecrow utilized an AI-generated clone of YouTuber Jeff Geerling’s voice for promotional purposes.

How to Access the Technology

YouTube has provided detailed instructions on its Creator Insider channel regarding how creators can utilize the new system.

The onboarding process begins with navigating to the “Likeness” tab and providing consent for data processing. Creators will then scan a QR code with their smartphone, which directs them to a webpage for identity verification.

This verification requires submission of a valid photo ID and a short selfie video.

Managing Detected Content

Upon gaining access, creators can review all videos identified by the system. They can then submit a removal request, adhering to YouTube’s established privacy guidelines.

Alternatively, creators have the option to submit a copyright claim or simply archive the video in question.

Opting Out

Creators retain the ability to opt out of using the likeness detection technology at any time. YouTube will cease scanning for videos featuring their likeness within 24 hours of opting out.

Background and Support for Legislation

The likeness-detection technology has been undergoing pilot testing since earlier this year. Last year, YouTube announced a partnership with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to assist celebrities, athletes, and creators in identifying content utilizing their AI-generated likeness on the platform.

Furthermore, in April, YouTube publicly voiced its support for the NO FAKES Act, legislation aimed at addressing the challenges posed by AI-generated replicas used to deceive and create harmful content.
