YouTube Creative Commons Library: A Resource for Remixing

YouTube Integrates Creative Commons Licensing

Creative Commons, a licensing system for intellectual property, allows creators to maintain their rights while permitting others to reuse and build upon their work. This functionality has now been integrated directly into YouTube.

Within the YouTube Video Editor, a new "cc" button has been added. This button grants access to the YouTube Creative Commons library.

Accessing and Utilizing Creative Commons Content

Videos released under a Creative Commons license are now discoverable within the editor. Users can then remix or sample these clips for use in their own video creations and uploads.

The use of these clips is provided without cost, but any new video incorporating sourced material will display the titles of the original videos in its information section.

Expanding the Creative Commons Library

Currently, the number of videos available under Creative Commons licensing is somewhat limited.

However, YouTube is actively collaborating with organizations such as C-SPAN, Public Resource.org, Voice of America, and Al Jazeera to expand the library’s offerings.

The platform anticipates making over 10,000 videos available, though the precise timing of this expansion remains unspecified.

User Contributions to the Library

The ability to publish videos under a Creative Commons license isn't restricted to large organizations.

Any YouTube user can now choose to upload their videos under this license, contributing to the growing database of freely reusable content.

This option is accessible during the upload process, located below the privacy settings. Furthermore, the license of previously uploaded videos can be modified to Creative Commons.
