Talk to Google Photos: AI Editing is Here

Google Photos Gains AI-Powered Editing Capabilities

During Wednesday’s Made by Google event, the company unveiled new functionalities within Google Photos. These updates empower users to request edits to their images directly through the application.

Initially, this feature will be available on Pixel 10 devices within the United States. Users will be able to articulate desired modifications to photos using either voice commands or text input.

Enhanced Transparency with C2PA Content Credentials

Google is also integrating support for C2PA Content Credentials into Google Photos. The Pixel 10 phones will represent the first Google devices to implement this standard.

This standard aims to increase clarity regarding the creation process of images and the potential involvement of artificial intelligence. On Pixel devices, C2PA support is built into the Camera app and applies to all captured photos, regardless of whether AI tools were utilized.

The new “edit by asking” feature utilizes the power of Gemini. This allows users to request alterations to a photograph using everyday language.

For example, a user could instruct the app to “remove the cars in the background,” or offer a broader request such as “restore this old photo.” Google Photos will then automatically execute the requested changes.

Simplifying Photo Editing for All Users

This addition is particularly beneficial for individuals who may lack extensive technical expertise or a deep understanding of traditional photo editing software. It enables them to easily enhance their images.

The feature is capable of handling a wide range of tasks. These include adjustments to lighting, removal of unwanted elements, and even more imaginative edits like altering backgrounds or adding objects to a scene.

Google suggests users could employ this to add accessories like sunglasses and party hats to subjects within their photos, among numerous other possibilities.

Intelligent Suggestions and Refinements

Even without a specific request, users can initiate the process with a general prompt like “make it better.” Google Photos will then automatically apply improvements to the image.

The application can also proactively offer suggestions for potential enhancements. Furthermore, it supports iterative refinement through follow-up requests, allowing users to fine-tune their edits to achieve the desired result.

Google confirms that C2PA support will first arrive on Pixel 10 devices. A subsequent rollout to Google Photos across both iOS and Android platforms is planned for the coming weeks.

The “edit by asking” functionality was launched on Wednesday.
