Talk to Gemini on iPhone Lock Screen - New Feature

Gemini Now Accessible from iPhone Lock Screen
Google Gemini users are now able to interact with the AI chatbot directly from their iPhone’s lock screen. This functionality was introduced via an update released on Monday, as initially reported by 9to5Google.
The update enables users to activate Gemini Live, Google’s near real-time voice capability for its AI chatbot, without unlocking their device. This is achieved by adding a Gemini widget to the iPhone’s lock screen.
Competition in the AI Assistant Space
With reports suggesting a delay in the release of Apple’s AI-powered Siri until 2027, other AI companies are providing alternative solutions for iPhone users. These offerings allow users to experience the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) and voice assistants.
It’s anticipated that Apple’s eventual LLM-powered Siri will offer deeper integration with the iPhone’s existing features and functionalities.
Similar Features from Competitors
ChatGPT also provides a comparable feature within its iOS application. Users can access OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode, offering near real-time voice interaction, directly from the lock screen.
Expanded Lock Screen Widgets
Beyond Gemini Live, the updated Gemini app introduces a range of additional lock screen widgets. These include options for capturing images with the iPhone camera and uploading them to Gemini.
Users can also utilize widgets for setting reminders, scheduling calendar events, and initiating text-based conversations with the Gemini chatbot.
Future Android Capabilities
Google announced that, later in March, Gemini users on Android devices will be able to pose questions about video content and onscreen elements. The AI chatbot will then provide responses in real time.
These features were initially showcased as part of Project Astra, a multimodal AI initiative from Google DeepMind. They will initially be available to subscribers of the $20-per-month Gemini Advanced plan.
