Wasp Secures $1.5M Seed Funding to Accelerate Web App Development

Numerous startups are currently focused on simplifying the app coding process for developers. Recently, we reported on RunX’s seed round, which aims to expedite the coding of back-end cloud resources. Now, Wasp, a Y Combinator Winter 2021 graduate, has announced a $1.5 million seed round intended to help programmers accelerate the development of application business logic.

Investment Details

The funding round was co-led by Lunar Ventures and HV Capital, with participation from 468 Capital, Tokyo Black, Acequia Capital, Abstraction Capital, and a number of angel investors.

Addressing Full-Stack Complexity

Wasp CEO Matija Sosic explained that the company was founded in Croatia in 2019, alongside his twin brother Martin, with the goal of streamlining the integration of various services into a complete web application.

They achieve this by offering a configuration layer compatible with existing coding languages like React or Node.js.

A Unified Development Experience

“Essentially, Wasp provides a streamlined language for constructing full-stack applications with reduced code and integrated best practices,” Sosic stated. “Our aim is to deliver a cohesive experience for developers, eliminating the need to assemble disparate solutions.”

Open Source and Future Revenue

Similar to RunX, Wasp is an open source tool freely accessible to all developers. It has already gained traction, with approximately 300 applications built using the platform.

Currently, the focus remains on refining the open source tooling before exploring revenue generation strategies, though monetization is a future objective.

Company Origins and Growth

Sosic and his brother initially funded the company with their own resources. Following an early release on Product Hunt earlier this year, they garnered initial interest, leading to their acceptance into Y Combinator and ultimately, securing this seed funding.

Roadmap and Availability

The product is currently in alpha and available for download on GitHub. The newly acquired funds will be used to enhance features, transition to a beta phase, and ultimately launch version 1.0 of the product.
