Addressing Screen Flicker on CRT Monitors

Despite advancements in display technology, Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors remain in use in many workplaces. Budgetary constraints often dictate a gradual replacement process. Recently, while resolving an issue with an older computer utilizing a CRT, the pronounced flickering of the screen was notably unpleasant.

Resolving CRT Monitor Flicker

Fortunately, rectifying this issue is a straightforward process. Begin by right-clicking on any unoccupied space on the desktop. From the context menu, select "Properties."

This action will open the Display Properties window. Navigate to the "Settings" tab, and subsequently click the "Advanced" button.

Within the Advanced display options, select the "Monitor" tab. Here, choose the highest screen refresh rate supported by your CRT monitor.

After selecting the optimal refresh rate, click "Apply" and then "OK" to save the changes.

The improvement in display quality will be immediately apparent. The screen will exhibit a significantly smoother image, and the distracting flicker will be substantially reduced.

Important Note: Increasing the refresh rate can sometimes cause compatibility issues. If you encounter problems, try a slightly lower setting.

Here's a quick recap of the steps:

  • Right-click on the desktop and select "Properties."
  • Go to the "Settings" tab, then click "Advanced."
  • Select the "Monitor" tab and choose the highest available refresh rate.
  • Click "Apply" and "OK."
