XAI AI Model Delay: A Growing Trend?

Delays Mount for Highly Anticipated AI Models

The number of prominent AI models that have missed their initially projected release dates is steadily increasing.

Grok 3's Postponement

Elon Musk, founder and CEO of xAI, initially stated that Grok 3, the company’s forthcoming major AI model, would be launched before the close of 2024.

Grok, designed as a competitor to models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Google’s Gemini, possesses the ability to interpret images and provide responses to queries. It currently underpins several functionalities within X, Musk’s social media platform.

In a July post on X, Musk indicated that “Grok 3 end of year after training on 100k H100s should be really something special,” referencing xAI’s substantial GPU cluster located in Memphis. He further asserted in December that Grok 3 would represent “a major leap forward.”

However, as of January 2nd, Grok 3 has not been released, and there are currently no indications of an impending launch.

Interestingly, code discovered on xAI’s website by AI analyst Tibor Blaho suggests that an interim model, designated “Grok 2.5,” might be released prior to Grok 3.

A Pattern of Missed Deadlines

It’s worth noting that Musk has a history of setting ambitious targets and subsequently failing to meet them. His predictions regarding product launch timelines are often considered overly optimistic.

Musk did qualify his earlier statement during an August interview with Lex Fridman, stating that Grok 3 would be available in 2024 “if we’re lucky.”

The delay of Grok 3 is noteworthy as it aligns with a broader trend within the AI industry.

Last year, Anthropic, an AI startup, did not release a successor to its leading Claude 3 Opus model. Despite announcing that Claude 3.5 Opus would be available by the end of 2024, Anthropic subsequently removed all references to the model from its documentation. Reports suggest that while training for Claude 3.5 Opus was completed, its release was deemed economically unviable.

There are also reports indicating that both Google and OpenAI have encountered setbacks with their respective flagship models in recent months.

Challenges in AI Scaling

These delays may highlight the inherent limitations of current AI scaling laws – the methodologies employed to enhance model capabilities. Previously, significant performance improvements were achievable through increased computational power and larger datasets.

However, the incremental gains with each new model generation are diminishing, prompting companies to explore alternative approaches.

Musk touched upon this issue during his conversation with Fridman.

Fridman inquired, “You’re hoping for [Grok 3] to be state-of-the-art?”

Musk responded, “Hopefully. I mean, this is the goal. We may fail at this goal. That’s the aspiration.”

Factors Contributing to Delays

Additional factors may contribute to Grok 3’s delay. xAI operates with a smaller team compared to many of its competitors. Nevertheless, the postponed launch date reinforces the growing evidence that traditional AI training methods are facing significant obstacles.
