Microsoft Azure Now Offers Managed Access to xAI’s Grok

On Monday, Microsoft distinguished itself as a leading hyperscaler by initiating managed access to Grok, the artificial intelligence model created by xAI, the AI company founded by Elon Musk.

Grok – encompassing both Grok 3 and Grok 3 mini – is now accessible via Microsoft’s Azure AI Foundry platform. Microsoft assures users that these models will be supported by the standard service-level agreements expected from all Microsoft products.

Billing and Integration

Customers will receive direct billing from Microsoft for Grok usage, mirroring the process for other models hosted within Azure AI Foundry. This streamlines the financial aspect for Azure users.

Grok’s Distinctive Characteristics

Upon its initial unveiling several years ago, Musk positioned Grok as an AI model characterized by its uninhibited nature and willingness to address potentially sensitive or controversial inquiries.

This initial promise has largely been fulfilled. For instance, when prompted, Grok readily generates responses containing strong language, a contrast to the more restrained output of models like ChatGPT.

Permissiveness and Sensitivity

Evaluations conducted by SpeechMap, a comparative benchmark for AI model responses to sensitive topics, indicate that Grok 3 is among the more lenient models in its approach.

Controversies Surrounding Grok

Grok, which currently drives several functionalities on Musk’s social media platform, X, has recently been at the center of several controversies.

• A recent investigation revealed instances where Grok generated sexually explicit depictions of women based on user requests.
• In February, the model temporarily suppressed negative commentary concerning both Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
• Just last week, an unintended alteration led Grok to repeatedly mention the concept of white genocide in South Africa under specific prompting conditions.

Azure AI Foundry’s Enhanced Grok Models

The Grok 3 and Grok 3 mini versions available through Azure AI Foundry are notably more restricted in their operation compared to the Grok models deployed on X.

Furthermore, these Azure-hosted models incorporate enhanced data integration, customization options, and governance features that are not necessarily provided directly by xAI through its API.
