X Timelines Experiencing Update Issues for Numerous Users

Update, 7:50 a.m. Pacific: Approximately one hour following the initial publication of this report, notifications have resumed functioning for this reporter. However, individual experiences may differ. The original story is presented below.

Beginning Thursday evening, a significant number of X users – the social platform owned by Elon Musk – have reported that their timelines are no longer refreshing.

Notification Problems Reported

A widespread issue has emerged where users are not receiving alerts for new posts from accounts they follow on X. This reporter is also affected by this problem. The X timeline has remained stagnant for the past 15 hours, last updating around 6 p.m. Eastern time on May 8th.

The issue appears to stem from a server-side error. Affected users confirm that their timelines are not updating whether using the X mobile applications or accessing the platform through a web browser. Attempts to resolve the problem by switching devices or browsers have proven unsuccessful.

Furthermore, subscribing to X Premium, the platform’s paid service, does not appear to rectify the situation.

Downdetector, a service monitoring application and service status, indicates a notable increase in reports concerning X outages over the last 24 hours.

Simultaneously, multiple discussions regarding the notification issue have surfaced on Reddit overnight.

One user from Germany posted, “No notifications since approximately 10 p.m. last night!” Another user within the same Reddit thread stated, “I attempted to resolve the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling the application, but this did not work.”

No Official Response

As of this moment, X has not provided a response to requests for comment regarding the situation.

Past Outages

X previously experienced a major outage in March, resulting in widespread disconnections for users globally. Accessing feeds, sending messages, and interacting with content were all disrupted. Elon Musk attributed this disruption to a cyberattack, though no evidence was presented to support this claim.

Prior to this, X encountered significant connectivity problems in December 2022 and July 2023.

Workforce Reductions

Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of X (formerly Twitter) for $44 billion in 2022, the company underwent substantial workforce reductions. Approximately 80% of the workforce was eliminated, decreasing the number of employees from 7,500 to 1,300.

By January 2023, X employed only 550 full-time engineers, as reported by CNBC. Further layoffs impacted the company in November 2024, with the engineering department being particularly affected.
