XChat: Expanded Access to Encrypted Direct Messaging

The highly anticipated XChat, X’s end-to-end encrypted direct messaging feature, is experiencing a broader rollout to users.

Initially released in beta during May, XChat is now becoming accessible to a larger user base, extending even to those who haven't subscribed to X Premium.

Key Features of XChat

XChat operates as a distinct system, separate from the standard direct message inbox, and provides complete end-to-end encryption for enhanced privacy.

The platform supports a comprehensive range of functionalities. These include the sharing of media files, the creation of group conversations, the pinning of important messages, and the ability to manage message status as read or unread.

Development of a disappearing message feature, often referred to as “vanishing mode,” is also reportedly underway.

Accessing XChat

Currently, access to XChat is opt-in; users must actively choose to utilize the feature.

On desktop platforms, XChat is available to select users through the messages tab. A “Chat” option, appearing above “Message requests” in the menu, facilitates navigation.

Mobile users will find the “Chat” option prominently displayed in the main navigation bar on the left side of the screen, positioned just above the Communities section.

Security Measures

Prior to initiating conversations within XChat, users are required to establish a four-digit passcode. This security measure mirrors those found in other encrypted messaging applications, such as Signal, and serves to protect message content.

Messaging can only commence after this passcode has been successfully set, and only with other users who have also enabled the feature.

Coexistence with Existing DMs

At this time, XChat does not fully supersede the existing direct messaging system. Conversations conducted through the original DM system are now categorized under a tab labeled “unencrypted” within the chat menu.
