X Introduces New Account Transparency Features

Elon Musk’s X platform has initiated the deployment of a novel feature for user profiles. This enhancement will showcase detailed account information, aiming to bolster authenticity.

Details Displayed on User Profiles

The information presented will encompass the account’s geographical location, the number of times the username has been altered, the initial date of account creation, and the method by which the user initially downloaded the X application.

This initiative is primarily intended to curtail inauthentic activity on the platform. Specifically, it addresses the issue of bots masquerading as genuine users – a challenge that is anticipated to become more complex with the increasing sophistication of AI.

Feature Announcement and Initial Testing

X first unveiled its intentions regarding this feature in October. Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, announced plans to experiment with displaying this data on profiles.

Testing commenced with Bier’s own account and those belonging to other X employees. The core concept is to empower users to make more informed judgments about the authenticity of the accounts they interact with.

By revealing these details, users can better discern whether they are engaging with a legitimate account or a potentially malicious bot attempting to spread misinformation or create discord.

Identifying Potential Inconsistencies

For example, a discrepancy between a user’s stated location in their bio and the account information indicating a different geographical base could raise suspicions.

Elon Musk received a direct request from a user to mandate the display of location information on all accounts. Bier responded, promising implementation within 72 hours.

Accessing Your Account Information

Currently, an increasing number of users are reporting the availability of the “About this account” feature on their own profiles.

To access this information on the web or within the X mobile app, simply click on the “Joined” date displayed on your profile.

This action directs you to a dedicated page showcasing your original Twitter/X join date, your account’s registered location, the number of username changes made, and the last modification date.

Additionally, the page details your connection to X, such as through the U.S. App Store or Google Play.

Rollout and User Control

While some users are already seeing the feature, TechCrunch has not yet been able to access this information on other profiles. This phased rollout may allow users to review and adjust their settings for accuracy.

X provides users with control over the level of geographical detail displayed. They can choose to show their country or a broader regional designation.

Initially, this option was intended for regions where free speech might carry legal repercussions, but it is now available to all users, including those in the U.S.

The default setting remains the display of the user’s country.

Future Feature: VPN Detection

App code analysis reveals that X is developing a feature to warn users if a VPN is being used to conceal their location.

If implemented, this feature will indicate that a user’s “country or region may not be accurate.” The timeline for this feature’s release remains uncertain.

X has not yet issued a formal comment regarding the rollout. However, Bier acknowledged the increasing number of user sightings, confirming the feature’s gradual deployment.

Industry Trend: Transparency on Social Networks

X is not alone in prioritizing account transparency. Instagram has long offered a comparable “About this account” feature to its users.

This move reflects a broader industry trend towards increased accountability and authenticity on social media platforms.
