WordPress Telex: Exploring the New AI Development Tool

WordPress Introduces Telex, an Experimental AI Development Tool
The web publishing platform, WordPress, is currently testing an initial iteration of an AI-powered development tool. This new tool, as described by WordPress co-founder and Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg, is designated as a “V0 or Lovable” release – a reference to popular AI-driven software development approaches.
Mullenweg unveiled Telex, the name of this WordPress AI tool, at the WordCamp US 2025 conference held in Portland last week. This introduction occurred alongside presentations of other ongoing AI-related experiments.
Telex Functionality and Access
During his keynote speech, Mullenweg provided a concise demonstration of Telex’s capabilities. The tool is designed to facilitate the creation of Gutenberg blocks – the fundamental components used to construct WordPress websites.
He illustrated how a developer successfully utilized Telex to generate a straightforward marketing animation.
Currently accessible via its dedicated domain, telex.automattic.ai, Telex is explicitly labeled as “experimental.” Users interact with the service by inputting a prompt detailing the desired content block.
The resulting output is delivered as a .zip file, readily installable as a plugin on a WordPress site or within WordPress Playground – a platform enabling WordPress operation directly within a web browser, eliminating the need for external hosting.
WordPress's Broader AI Initiatives
This launch follows WordPress’s earlier announcement regarding the formation of a dedicated AI team. This team is tasked with guiding the development of AI products that align with the WordPress project’s overarching, long-term objectives.
Initial testing has revealed that Telex is still under development. Several test projects encountered issues, requiring further refinement before functioning correctly.
Despite acknowledging its prototype status, Mullenweg expressed strong optimism regarding AI’s potential to advance the WordPress mission over time.
Democratizing Publishing with AI
“Democratized publishing is central to WordPress’ mission,” Mullenweg stated. “We aim to simplify complex tasks, removing the need for specialized coding knowledge and making website creation accessible to a wider audience.”
He emphasized the platform’s commitment to openness, multilingual support, affordability, and open-source principles, ensuring user ownership and control.
Mullenweg also recognized potential concerns surrounding AI’s rapid advancement and the possibility of a market bubble, but remained enthusiastic about its enabling capabilities.
“At its core, AI offers a truly empowering opportunity,” he commented. “This is an exceptionally exciting period for development within the WordPress ecosystem.”
Additional AI Tools and Legal Matters
Mullenweg also showcased a simpler AI tool, developed during Contributor Day with a few hours of effort. This tool provides an in-browser WordPress help assistant.
He also highlighted his preference for the Perplexity Comet AI browser, which allows users to interact with WordPress directly from its interface.
Regarding ongoing legal disputes, Mullenweg provided a brief update on the case involving hosting provider WP Engine.
He alleges that WP Engine is benefiting from WordPress’s work without making sufficient contributions back to the project. He is seeking a licensing agreement for the WordPress trademark to prevent customer confusion.
“The case is progressing through the legal system, and we have faith in the courts,” Mullenweg said. “A settlement conference took place, but the opposing CEO did not attend. That is all I will comment on at this time.”
