Telex: WordPress's AI Tool in Action

Just months after its September introduction, WordPress’s experimental AI development tool, Telex, is already being implemented in practical applications.

During Tuesday’s “State of the Word” event held in San Francisco, Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of WordPress and CEO of Automattic, showcased several instances of Telex being utilized within a functioning WordPress environment.

Real-World Applications of Telex

These applications included the creation of price comparison features, dynamic price calculators, and the integration of live business hours alongside a map link for retail locations.

Previously described by Mullenweg as a “v0 or Lovable” project specifically tailored for WordPress, Telex represents the platform’s effort to establish its own AI-powered vibe-coding solution.

The software empowers developers to generate Gutenberg blocks – the fundamental components of a WordPress website, encompassing text, images, columns, and more.

Despite its current experimental status, Mullenweg demonstrated several examples developed by community contributor Nick Hamze.

One demonstration highlighted a price comparison tool constructed with Telex. Previously, such interactive web elements required custom development, but can now be generated in a matter of seconds.

Telex was also used to build a carousel of partner logos, a bespoke pricing tool, a Google Calendar integration, and a responsive grid for homepage posts, ensuring consistent card heights.

Accessibility and the Future of Development

Nick Hamze, in a statement to TechCrunch, highlighted Telex’s accessibility, noting that he is not a coder but can still create desired features simply by describing them to the tool.

He described this freedom as “intoxicating” and expressed strong support for AI’s role in web development.

Hamze believes that framing these tools as solely for developers overlooks their true potential – empowering individuals without coding knowledge to achieve previously unattainable results.

WordPress's Broader AI Initiatives

The Telex demonstrations were presented alongside other AI-focused developments within WordPress, including the Abilities API and the MCP adapter.

The Abilities API defines WordPress’s capabilities in a format understandable by AI systems, while the MCP adapter makes these abilities accessible to tools compatible with the MCP standard.

This adapter approach allows WordPress to integrate into AI workflows without redundant coding or the need for separate integrations for each AI platform.

Mullenweg explained that this enables connection to popular tools like Claude, Copilot, and other MCP-supported platforms.

Furthermore, developers are already leveraging AI in their workflows through tools like Cursor and Claude Code, enabling code refactoring, codebase searching, task automation, and script execution with WP CLI alongside AI agents.

Looking ahead to 2026, WordPress plans to introduce benchmarks and evaluations for AI models to assess their performance on WordPress tasks, such as plugin modification, text editing, and interface manipulation via browser agents.
