On Wednesday, WordPress.com unveiled a novel AI website builder. This new feature empowers users to construct a fully functional website through an intuitive, chat-based AI interface.

The tool is currently being offered to WordPress users at no cost. It is specifically designed for entrepreneurs, independent contractors, bloggers, and anyone requiring a professional web presence, according to the company.

Current Capabilities and Limitations

Currently, the AI builder is not equipped to generate more complex websites. This includes those needed for e-commerce operations or sites demanding intricate integrations.

While AI-driven website builders are becoming increasingly common, this addition aims to strengthen WordPress’s competitive position. It directly challenges companies like Squarespace and Wix, which also provide AI builders to accelerate website creation and design processes.

However, similar to many existing builders, substantial website modifications and advanced layout adjustments will still necessitate expertise in web development and design principles. This situation may evolve over time as the AI learns from user-initiated edits post-creation.

How the AI Builder Works

Users interact with an AI chatbot in a conversational manner to design their website. They can incorporate their own text and images, and also configure the site’s overall layout.

The process begins with users entering a prompt detailing their website concept – for example, “build a website for my coffee shop.” The company recommends providing as much detail as possible, including the desired site name, a brief description, and information regarding the content to be hosted.

Following this, users either register for a new WordPress account or log in to an existing one. The AI then constructs the website based on the provided instructions. (Note that this feature is exclusively available for entirely new websites.)

Post-Creation Options and Pricing

Once the site is generated, users can refine it through further conversation with the AI. Alternatively, they can make manual adjustments if they prefer. The AI builder offers 30 complimentary prompts. Beyond this, a hosting plan is required, all of which include unlimited prompts.

This allows users to evaluate the AI builder’s capabilities before committing to WordPress.com hosting.

The AI powering this tool is based on a combination of self-hosted, open-source models and externally hosted models.

Launching the completed website requires a hosting plan. These plans typically range from $48 annually for a personal site to $300 annually for a business site. WordPress.com specifies that users utilizing the AI builder will need to select either the Premium ($96/year) or Business plan.

These plans encompass a designated amount of storage, a complimentary domain for one year, access to premium themes, customer support, and additional benefits. The AI builder is provided alongside these plans without any extra charges.
