Elliot Wolf, serving as executive producer and the son of the renowned Dick Wolf, is initiating a novel project designed to captivate enthusiasts of the true crime genre.

Alongside co-founders Andrew Adashek, the CEO, and Noah Rosenberg, the CTO, he is spearheading the development of Wolf Games, a fresh startup that utilizes artificial intelligence to produce daily murder mystery games. The company also revealed a $4 million seed funding round on Wednesday.

Introducing “Public Eye”

Wolf Games’ primary offering, titled Public Eye, taps into the escalating fascination among true crime aficionados who frequently enjoy the role of detective.

The game is situated in a dystopian future characterized by soaring crime rates, leading law enforcement to believe that soliciting public assistance is a viable strategy. Players are tasked with collecting clues, assembling evidence, and leveraging an AI assistant to guide their investigations and provide helpful hints for solving each crime.

AI-Powered Mystery Creation

The consistent creation of new murder mysteries for daily player engagement presents a significant challenge. To address this, Wolf Games employs an AI engine that assists their writing team in rapidly developing new cases.

The AI draws inspiration from headlines originating from prominent news outlets, including CBS and NBC. Echoing the format of “Law & Order,” one of television’s longest-running true crime dramas, the company emphasizes that the game’s narratives are largely fictional and inspired by these headlines, rather than direct replications.

AI’s Role Extends Beyond Storytelling

Beyond crafting narratives, AI is also utilized to generate interview segments and photographic depictions of crime scenes.

“With a single click, we transform a linear story into a fully interactive and playable experience,” Wolf explained to TechCrunch, noting that leading AI models like Gemini are employed to maintain character consistency throughout the storyline.

“For instance, should a character acquire a facial scar midway through the narrative, that scar will be consistently present in all subsequent appearances of that character,” Wolf clarified.

Initial Testing and Gameplay

We personally tested the game, attempting to solve the murder of a shopkeeper. The list of suspects included a dubious intern, a boyfriend struggling with alcohol, and a frustrated daughter.

Considering the story was predominantly generated by AI, the experience was surprisingly engaging and featured an unexpected plot twist. (It is worth acknowledging that true crime narratives often benefit from the inherent drama found in real-life events.)

Competitive Landscape and Investment

The true crime game market is notably competitive; however, the founders believe their expertise positions them to attract a substantial player base.

The quality of the investors further underscores the potential of this venture. The pre-seed funding round saw participation from Dick Wolf himself, Beats co-founder Jimmy Iovine, and United Talent Agency Chairman Paul Wachter.

Launch Details and Future Plans

Public Eye is scheduled to launch on the web this summer. It will be available for free play, with optional in-app purchases. Interested players can join a waitlist to secure early access.
