Withings Unveils ScanWatch Horizon: A Hybrid Smartwatch with Diving Aesthetic

Withings has announced the launch of the ScanWatch Horizon, essentially a refined version of its ScanWatch, presented within the robust casing of a diving timepiece. The Horizon features a larger, 43mm case size, while retaining all the functionalities that have established the original ScanWatch as a leading hybrid smartwatch.

These features encompass a built-in ECG, a blood oxygen sensor, and capabilities for tracking sleep apnea, alongside standard activity and sleep monitoring. The device also incorporates the signature dual sub-dials – one displaying a small digital screen for notifications, and the other functioning as an analog activity tracker.

First Impressions and Design

A preview event held in Paris provided an opportunity to examine and try on a non-functional prototype of the ScanWatch Horizon. Its aesthetic appeal lived up to expectations, and the inclusion of a steel quick-release band contributed to a premium feel, especially considering its price point.

Notably, Withings intends to broaden its retail strategy by offering the ScanWatch Horizon through jewelers, in addition to existing retail channels.

Target Audience and Size

The company communicated to Engadget that the more substantial Horizon model is designed with a “masculine” aesthetic, catering to individuals with larger wrists, and will be exclusively available in the 43mm size. In comparison, the initial ScanWatch was offered in sizes ranging from 38mm to 42mm.

Features and Limitations

Despite the increased size and price, the feature set remains unchanged. Consequently, the ScanWatch Horizon does not include integrated GPS functionality, requiring a paired smartphone for location tracking.

While styled as a diving watch – complete with a precisely laser-engraved rotating bezel and Luminova watch hands – its water resistance is limited to 10ATM. This allows for snorkeling, water sports, and some recreational scuba diving, but falls short of the capabilities of dedicated diving watches.

Market Positioning

The smartwatch market currently lacks options that successfully blend premium diving watch styling with smart functionalities. Withings aims to challenge TAG Heuer’s Connected as the dominant choice in this niche, particularly given the latter’s reliance on Wear OS.

Withings informed Engadget that the release of the ScanWatch Horizon in the US is currently pending FDA approval of its ECG health sensor, with an anticipated launch before the year's end. This regulatory hurdle also explains the delayed US availability of the original ScanWatch.

The ScanWatch Horizon will initially be available in the UK starting September 29th, priced at £499.95 / €499.95. Customers can select between Blue or Green face colors, and each model includes both a quick-release stainless steel band and an FKM rubber band for swimming.

The device is also launching today in France and Germany, with wider European availability expected shortly.
