Exploring Microsoft System Center Essentials 2007

This week provided an opportunity to evaluate Microsoft’s System Center Essentials (SCE) 2007. The intention is to share these initial observations with IT professionals. SCE effectively succeeds the earlier Systems Management Server (SMS) as an IT management solution.

Having not previously worked with SMS, a direct comparison isn’t possible. However, a review of SCE reveals its capabilities. IT administrators can utilize a single, consolidated console to manage their entire network infrastructure.

Centralized Network Management

Through SCE, monitoring of workstations, servers, and the network itself is streamlined. Software deployments and MS updates are also managed from this central application.

This initial exploration only scratches the surface of SCE’s functionality. For organizations operating a fully Windows-based network, this tool appears to be a highly effective management solution.

Further details and screenshots illustrating SCE’s capabilities will be provided. Future posts will delve into specific experiences and useful techniques for leveraging the system.

SCE incorporates a comprehensive suite of features, including real-time monitoring of hardware, software, and intelligent network devices. Detailed insights into network performance are readily available.

Unified Reporting Capabilities

A standout feature of SCE is its unified reporting functionality. This is built upon the SQL 2005 engine and includes 30 pre-configured reports available immediately after installation.

These reports can be scheduled for daily email delivery, providing proactive insights. The possibility of creating customized reports is anticipated and will be investigated further.

Server and Workstation Actions

SCE offers a wide range of actions that can be performed on servers and workstations within the network. The sheer number of options requires hands-on exploration to fully appreciate.

A minor usability issue was noted: a seemingly unnecessary pop-up screen appears when selecting tasks under the Actions menu. It is hoped this can be disabled, particularly when utilizing default settings.

A single post cannot adequately cover all aspects of SCE. As experience with the system grows, more detailed information regarding specific tasks will be shared.

Those with prior experience using SMS or SCE 2007 are encouraged to share their insights and experiences in the comments. This is a new system, and feedback is welcome.
