Spatial Video vs. Zoom Calls: A New Era of Communication?

The Rise of Spatial Virtual Interaction
As many individuals find themselves primarily interacting through video conferencing platforms like Zoom, a growing desire exists to move beyond the confines of a static screen. This has fueled interest in virtual spaces where participants are represented as avatars and can navigate a digital environment.
This spatial approach to virtual meetings offers users a greater sense of agency. Even within a simulated setting, the ability to choose where to “go” provides a feeling of increased control.
SpatialChat: Evolving the Virtual Experience
SpatialChat, a startup that initially gained traction on ProductHunt in April 2020, is enhancing its platform with a redesigned interface and the addition of persistent chat functionality. The platform quickly achieved recognition, ranking as the No. 3 app on ProductHunt on its launch day.
The company has been entirely self-funded by its founders. SpatialChat now caters to a growing client base, boasting over 3,000 organizations as paying customers and exceeding 200,000 monthly active users.
A Competitive Landscape
SpatialChat operates within a burgeoning virtual networking space, alongside platforms like Teamflow, Gather, and Remo. While initially focused on online networking events, the company is now expanding its focus to facilitate a wider range of discussions.
This includes everything from routine stand-up meetings to large-scale online conferences.
The platform utilizes a combination of proximity-based video chats, screen sharing capabilities, and virtual rooms accommodating up to 50 participants. New pricing structures are being implemented to support regular, weekly, and one-off usage scenarios.
Notable organizations utilizing SpatialChat include Sony, Panasonic, Sega, LinkedIn, Salesforce, and McKinsey. Furthermore, the platform is being adopted by educators and staff at over 108 American universities, such as Harvard, Stanford, Yale, and MIT.
Addressing the Limitations of Traditional Tools
According to Almas Abulkhairov, CEO and co-founder of SpatialChat, “While tools like Slack, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams function as virtual offices for many, a significant number of our customers find them inadequate for fostering the spontaneous exchange of ideas that occurs when working in close proximity.” He further notes the phenomenon of “Zoom fatigue” as a contributing factor.
The goal is to replicate the benefits of in-person collaboration within a virtual environment.
Konstantin Krasov, CPO at Data Souls, shared his experience: “During a two-day event for our community of 50,000 data scientists, we hosted 2,500 attendees. SpatialChat allowed us to create an engaging networking event, complete with Q&A and AMA sessions featuring leading figures in data science.”
