Smart Thermostat Turning Off AC? - Troubleshooting & Solutions

Smart Thermostat Unexpectedly Turning Off? Here's Why.
If you've recently installed a smart thermostat and it's intermittently shutting off your heating or air conditioning, it likely isn't a malfunction.
Instead, the device is probably utilizing an automated feature that, while intended to be helpful, can sometimes be counterproductive.
Energy Savings Through Automation
The majority of smart thermostats incorporate a function designed to automatically reduce energy consumption when the home is unoccupied.
This feature operates without requiring any manual intervention, potentially lowering your energy bills.
The determination of occupancy can be based on two primary methods, depending on the specific thermostat model.
- Motion detection via a sensor integrated into the thermostat unit.
- Geolocation tracking using the GPS capabilities of your smartphone – often referred to as geofencing.
On Nest Thermostats, these functionalities are known as Auto-Away and Home/Away Assist, respectively.
Auto-Away relies solely on the thermostat’s motion sensor to detect presence, while Home/Away Assist combines motion sensing with your phone’s location data.
Enabling only Auto-Away can lead to issues if the thermostat incorrectly perceives the home as vacant when occupants are present.
The Impact of Room Location
If you are at home, but primarily occupy rooms distant from the thermostat’s location, it may eventually conclude you’ve left.
Consequently, the thermostat will automatically adjust the temperature downwards until motion is detected again.
This can result in the air conditioning failing to activate when needed, simply because you haven’t recently passed by the thermostat.
Solutions to Prevent Unwanted Adjustments
While this behavior can be frustrating, several solutions are available.
Firstly, you can activate your thermostat’s geofencing feature, allowing it to utilize your phone’s GPS to accurately determine your presence.
Alternatively, you can disable all automatic away features and manually adjust the temperature settings upon leaving and returning home.
For Nest thermostats, this involves deactivating both Auto-Away and Home/Away Assist – remember these are distinct settings.
Although less convenient, some users prefer a degree of manual control over their smart thermostat’s operation.
Enabling Geofencing and Disabling Motion Sensing
To enable geofencing on a Nest Thermostat, simply activate Home/Away Assist.
This allows the thermostat to leverage your phone’s GPS for location awareness.
For Ecobee3 thermostats, geofencing can be implemented through an IFTTT (If This Then That) recipe.
To completely disable motion sensing on a Nest Thermostat, turn off both Auto-Away and Home/Away Assist within the settings menu.
On the Ecobee3, deactivate the Smart Home/Away feature in the settings.
Understanding the cause of these automatic adjustments empowers you to address the issue effectively.
However, it’s also prudent to consider the possibility of an HVAC system malfunction if your thermostat consistently fails to maintain the desired temperature.
