Why Does My Windows Password Expire? - Explained

Password Expiration Issues in Windows
A user recently inquired about frequent password expirations within their Windows Vista system. This explanation is provided for all those experiencing a similar issue. Certain Windows editions – specifically Windows XP Professional, Windows Vista Business, and Windows Vista Ultimate – incorporate a feature enabling password expiration for user accounts.
The difficulty arises when a local user account is configured to require periodic password changes, as the setting to modify this isn't immediately apparent in Vista.
Accessing Password Settings
It’s important to note that this issue is not present in the Home editions of Windows. To adjust the settings, initiate the Local Users and Groups administration panel.
This can be done by typing lusrmgr.msc into the search box within the Start Menu (or the Run box in Windows XP).
In the left-hand pane, select "Users". Then, locate and double-click your specific user account from the displayed list.
Within this account's properties, you will find a checkbox labeled "Password never expires".
Simply ensure this box is checked to prevent future password change prompts.
Solutions for Windows Home Edition Users
Users operating the Home edition of Windows do not have access to the lusrmgr.msc tool.
However, a solution is available through the download of User Manager for XP/Vista Home from XPHomeTools.
While this software is shareware, the trial version provides the functionality needed to disable password expiration.
Important Note: This tool allows you to manage user accounts and their settings, including password expiration, on Windows Home editions.
