WhatsApp Introduces Music Sharing to Status Updates

A new functionality was implemented by WhatsApp on Friday, enabling users to integrate short musical excerpts into their Status updates. This feature evokes memories of the popular social networking site, Myspace.

How the New Feature Works

WhatsApp Status functions similarly to Instagram Stories, allowing users to share ephemeral content – photos, videos, and text – that vanishes after a 24-hour period.

When composing a new Status update, users can now select a music note icon. This action grants access to a vast library containing millions of songs.

The duration of music clips that can be shared is dependent on the type of content. Users can post clips lasting up to 15 seconds alongside photos and up to 60 seconds with videos.

Following Meta’s Lead

This rollout of music clips occurs after Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, previously introduced comparable features to Instagram.

Instagram users are already able to incorporate songs into their profiles, Notes, and regular posts.

Key Difference: Enhanced Privacy

While the functionality is comparable, a crucial distinction exists between WhatsApp and Instagram’s implementations.

Music shared via WhatsApp Status benefits from end-to-end encryption. This ensures that only the user’s contacts can view the shared songs.

Importantly, WhatsApp itself does not have access to the music selections made by its users, preserving user privacy.

Global Rollout

The deployment of this new feature has begun on a global scale.

Availability will be progressively expanded to more users over the coming weeks, ensuring a widespread release.
