WhatsApp AI: Rephrase & Adjust Tone of Messages

WhatsApp Introduces AI-Powered Message Refinement
WhatsApp is implementing a novel AI feature designed to enable users to revise, proofread, and modify the style of their communications. This announcement was made by the Meta-owned company on Wednesday.
The newly introduced functionality, termed “Writing Help,” leverages Meta’s Private Processing technology. This ensures that users receive AI-driven suggestions without their original messages or proposed revisions being accessed by either Meta or WhatsApp.
How Writing Help Functions
Through Writing Help, users can obtain AI-generated alternatives that reword their messages to achieve a more professional, humorous, encouraging, or simply rephrased tone.
WhatsApp demonstrated the feature with an example message: “Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa.” The AI then provided “funny” rewrites, including: “Please don’t make the sofa a sock graveyard,” “Breaking news: Socks found chilling on the couch. Please move them,” and “Hey, sock ninja, the laundry basket is that way!”
Strategic Implications and User Considerations
This launch is anticipated to encourage users to utilize WhatsApp’s integrated technology when composing messages, rather than relying on external AI tools like ChatGPT.
However, it’s likely that not all users will embrace this new capability. Many individuals may prioritize genuine, personal interactions with loved ones over AI-generated text.
The application of AI to rewrite an email differs significantly from its use in messaging family members.
Accessing the New Feature
WhatsApp indicates that users can access Writing Help by selecting the new pencil icon that appears during message composition within the application.
The rollout of Writing Help is commencing in English within a limited number of countries, beginning on Wednesday.
