WhatsApp Adds Passkey Protection for End-to-End Encrypted Backups

WhatsApp Enhances Backup Security with Passkey Integration
A new method for accessing encrypted backups is being implemented within WhatsApp, leveraging passkey support. This advancement allows users to regain access to their WhatsApp backup data even in the event of device loss.
Access can be restored utilizing familiar authentication methods, such as fingerprint scanning, facial recognition, or the screen lock code previously used on their device.
Evolution of WhatsApp Backup Encryption
Previously, WhatsApp backups lacked an encryption layer. In 2021, Meta introduced end-to-end encryption for backups, offering users the option to secure their data with either a password or a 64-character encryption key.
However, both of these methods presented a challenge: users were required to retain their backup password or have the encryption key readily available during the restoration process.
The Advantage of Passkeys
Passkeys eliminate the need to remember and locate passwords or encryption keys. This streamlined approach simplifies the backup restoration process considerably.
This feature is particularly beneficial given WhatsApp’s substantial user base, which surpassed 3 billion active users in May.
Rollout and Activation
The rollout of this new functionality will occur over the coming weeks and months. Users should monitor for its availability within their WhatsApp application.
To enable encrypted backups and check for the passkey option, navigate to Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup.
