New functionalities are being rolled out by WhatsApp to assist users in identifying and avoiding scams on the messaging platform, as announced by the company on Tuesday.

Furthermore, WhatsApp reported the removal of over 6.8 million accounts associated with fraudulent scam operations targeting individuals globally.

Detecting Scams in Chats

The newly implemented features are engineered to detect scam attempts within both individual and group conversations on the Meta-owned service.

For group interactions, a safety overview feature is being launched. This will be presented to users when added to a new group by someone not present in their contacts – particularly if the group is unfamiliar.

Group Chat Safety Overview

This safety overview will provide crucial details regarding the group itself, alongside guidance on maintaining online safety.

Users will be able to determine if the individual who added them is a contact, and whether any existing group members are within their contact list.

Should a user recognize the group, they can opt to view the chat for further context. Regardless, notifications originating from the chat will be silenced until the user explicitly chooses to remain within the group.

Protecting Individual Chats

Regarding one-on-one conversations, WhatsApp acknowledges that scammers frequently initiate contact on other online platforms before requesting to communicate via private messaging apps like WhatsApp.

To counter this tactic, the application is currently testing new methods to alert users before they engage in conversations with potentially malicious individuals.

For instance, the system is being developed to provide additional contextual information when a user begins a chat with someone not saved in their contacts.

Collaboration with OpenAI to Disrupt Scams

WhatsApp also detailed its collaboration with OpenAI to dismantle scam operations originating from a scam center located in Cambodia.

These fraudulent schemes encompassed a range of activities, including offering compensation for artificial likes, recruiting participants into a pyramid scheme involving scooter rentals, and enticing individuals to invest in cryptocurrencies.

As explained in a blog post by WhatsApp, scammers leveraged ChatGPT to generate the initial text message containing a link to a WhatsApp chat.

Subsequently, targets were quickly redirected to Telegram, where they were assigned the task of liking videos on TikTok. The scammers attempted to establish trust by showcasing the amount the target had supposedly “earned,” before requesting a deposit into a cryptocurrency account.

Staying Safe from Scams

WhatsApp advises users to safeguard themselves against scams by pausing to consider the legitimacy of a message before responding.

It is important to question the rationality of any requests and to be wary of any pressure to act swiftly.

If a message claims to be from a friend or family member, users should verify their identity through an alternative communication channel.
