Amazon Alexa Event: What to Expect on Wednesday

Amazon's Upcoming Alexa Event in New York City
Amazon is scheduled to host a press event centered around Alexa in New York City this Wednesday. Given the company's absence of a significant device announcement for almost two years – the previous one occurred in September 2023 – expectations are high for substantial revelations.
Event Details and Leadership
The event will not be available via livestream. However, comprehensive coverage will be provided by TechCrunch reporters on location. The proceedings will be led by Panos Panay, Amazon’s recently appointed head of devices and services, previously recognized for his work with Microsoft Surface.
The event is set to commence at 10 a.m. Eastern Time.
Financial Pressures and Strategic Shifts
The event carries considerable importance for Amazon, which has reportedly incurred billions of dollars in losses within its Alexa division, despite the sale of hundreds of millions of devices. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has reportedly tasked the hardware division with identifying strategies to enhance profitability through monetized subscriptions, associated fees, and supplementary services.
An announcement regarding a new subscription model is anticipated during Wednesday’s event.
Introducing 'Remarkable Alexa'
Amazon is reportedly preparing to unveil an enhanced Alexa experience, internally referred to as 'Remarkable Alexa'. This upgrade aims to create more fluid and intuitive interactions with the assistant, mirroring the capabilities of platforms like ChatGPT.
The enhanced Alexa is projected to be priced between $5 and $10 per month. It is expected to process multiple requests within a single command and even execute actions independently.
Previous Announcements and Generative AI Integration
Some of this functionality was initially previewed by Amazon during its previous major devices event in 2023. The company had promised that the forthcoming Alexa experience would maintain compatibility with existing devices and leverage generative AI technologies.
This integration will allow the assistant to consider the context of user requests and personalize its responses accordingly.
Smart Home Enhancements
Improvements to smart home functionality are also anticipated with the new Alexa. Reports indicate that numerous companies are developing integrations utilizing developer tools that Amazon released in 2023.
Amazon has been collaborating with brands such as iRobot and Philips to develop features that simplify scene controls and improve Alexa’s understanding of user intentions regarding device operation.
Addressing Potential Challenges
A key concern is whether the new, AI-powered Alexa can overcome inherent limitations of generative AI technology. Late last year, reports surfaced indicating that the new Alexa struggled with fundamental commands, such as controlling smart lights.
Generative AI, prone to occasional inaccuracies and 'hallucinations', is often less dependable than the established systems currently underpinning Alexa’s functionality. The delays in the upgraded Alexa’s release have provided Amazon with time to mitigate potential issues, though some unpredictability remains.
Optional Upgrade Path
Fortunately, the new Alexa will not be a compulsory upgrade. Reports suggest Amazon will allow users to retain the “Classic Alexa” experience if they prefer.
Launch Timeline
The rollout of the upgraded Alexa has reportedly been postponed following instances where the assistant provided incorrect responses during testing. According to sources, the launch may now occur at the end of March or later.
The Washington Post reported on this delay earlier this month.
