OpenAI DevDay 2025: What to Expect & How to Watch

OpenAI Prepares for DevDay 2025
OpenAI is preparing to host its third annual developer conference, DevDay 2025, on Monday. Over 1,500 attendees are expected at Fort Mason in San Francisco for what the company describes as its “largest event to date.”
The conference agenda includes product announcements, keynote addresses from OpenAI leadership, and a discussion featuring CEO Sam Altman and renowned Apple designer Jony Ive.
Rising Influence in Silicon Valley
DevDay 2025 appears poised to showcase OpenAI’s growing prominence within Silicon Valley, positioning it alongside industry leaders such as Apple, Google, and Meta.
Currently, OpenAI is actively developing an AI-driven device, a social media platform, and an AI-enhanced browser intended to compete with Chrome.
This represents a significant expansion of OpenAI’s initiatives compared to its inaugural DevDay in 2023, which primarily centered around ChatGPT and its API for developers.
Increased Competition in the AI Landscape
Simultaneously, OpenAI is navigating a more competitive environment in its pursuit of developer adoption.
Over the past year, AI models from Anthropic and Google have demonstrated increasing proficiency in coding and web design tasks.
Consequently, OpenAI has been compelled to release more advanced AI models at reduced prices to maintain its competitive edge.
Furthermore, Meta has assembled a substantial team of AI experts within its Meta Superintelligence Labs, potentially presenting another challenge to OpenAI in the future.
A Look Back at Previous DevDays
OpenAI’s first DevDay in 2023 saw the unveiling of the GPT-4 Turbo model and Altman’s vision for a marketplace of AI agents, known as the GPT Store.
Shortly after this event, Altman was temporarily removed as CEO, only to be reinstated following a period of intense negotiations.
In 2024, OpenAI held a more restrained conference, focusing on developer-focused enhancements, including an API for AI voice applications.
Anticipation for DevDay 2025
While no official launches have been confirmed for DevDay 2025, speculation is rife.
There is anticipation that OpenAI may finally reveal the AI-powered browser it has been developing, or provide an update on the AI device being created in collaboration with Ive and other former Apple executives.
Updates regarding the GPT Store or new tools for developers to create agentic workflows are also possibilities.
Event Coverage and Viewing Options
TechCrunch will provide live coverage of the event from San Francisco, offering real-time news and updates.
DevDay 2025 will begin at 10 a.m. PT on October 6 with an opening keynote from Altman, promising announcements, live demonstrations, and insights into how developers are shaping the future with AI.
The keynote is expected to last approximately one hour and will be streamed live on OpenAI’s YouTube channel.
Event Schedule and Speakers
The keynote will be the only event available via livestream for remote viewers.
In-person attendees can expect onstage presentations and talks from Cursor CEO Michael Truell, San Francisco mayor Daniel Lurie, and Andreessen Horowitz investing partner Kimberly Tan.
Several OpenAI employees, including model behavior researcher Laurentia Romaniuk and Codex lead Alexander Embiricos, will also present their work.
Interactive Experiences at DevDay
DevDay 2025 will also feature a series of AI-powered interactive experiences.
“Sora Cinema” will offer a “cozy mini-theater with popcorn” showcasing short films generated by OpenAI’s Sora video model.
Attendees can also visit a phone booth featuring a “living portrait” of Alan Turing, the celebrated computer scientist, capable of engaging in conversation.
Concluding Events
The afternoon will conclude with two significant events, which will be uploaded to YouTube later in the day.
At 3:15 p.m. PT, a “Developer State of the Union” will be presented by OpenAI president Greg Brockman and Olivier Godement, head of product for the OpenAI Platform.
They are scheduled to demonstrate new features and outline future plans for developers.
Finally, at 4:15 p.m. PT, Altman and Ive will participate in a “Closing Fireside Chat,” discussing the challenges and opportunities of building in the age of AI, lasting approximately 45 minutes.
Updated 10/6/25: This article was initially published on 10/3/25. It has been revised to reflect adjustments to DevDay’s attendee list and recent rumors that emerged over the weekend.
