What's Updog? Datadog's New App Down Detection

Datadog Launches Updog: A Playful Approach to Service Monitoring
Datadog, a leading cloud monitoring and security platform, has playfully addressed a long-standing joke with its latest offering: "What's up, dog?".
The company’s response isn’t a casual greeting. Instead, they’ve introduced a web dashboard designed to provide developers with real-time status updates for numerous services and tools.
Key Services Monitored by Updog
- AWS
- Cloudflare
- OpenAI
- Slack
This allows users to quickly determine if major software providers are operating as expected. The Updog tool is freely accessible, enabling anyone to verify the operational status of prominent SaaS providers.
The branding choice was clearly intentional and well-received. Rhys Sullivan, a software engineer, initially questioned on X (formerly Twitter) why Datadog hadn't named an uptime monitoring product "Updog" back in June.
Four months later, Datadog engineer Tim Brown responded to Sullivan’s post with a link to the newly launched Updog.
It’s important to note that Sullivan’s original comment referenced a more comprehensive monitoring tool within the paid Datadog platform. Updog, being a free service, is geared towards providing a general overview of popular online service availability without requiring a Datadog subscription.
The Value of Proactive Monitoring
Beyond the playful branding, Updog presents a genuinely useful free resource for developers. Its utility would have been particularly evident during the recent day-long AWS outage.
This outage impacted a significant portion of the web, disrupting services for banks, payment processors, and even government agencies.
Datadog emphasizes that Updog distinguishes itself through its implementation of AI. This technology is designed to detect subtle anomalies in telemetry data – the remote transmission and collection of data from servers and services.
By identifying these patterns, Updog aims to surface potential outages more rapidly. Early detection of service issues can be crucial for businesses reliant on SaaS tools for critical functions like payment processing and data storage.
“Updog.ai recently surfaced an Amazon DynamoDB degradation 32 minutes before AWS updated its own status page,” Datadog reported in a blog post.
While major outages like the recent AWS incident may be unavoidable, early awareness of service disruptions allows companies valuable time to assess their situation and mitigate potential damage. This proactive capability is what makes Updog a valuable asset.
