Mobsync.exe: What Is It & Is It Safe?

Understanding the Mobsync.exe Process

Have you noticed the mobsync.exe process running in Task Manager, perhaps accompanied by a green and yellow icon in your Notification Area? This article will explain its function and detail how to disable it if the associated feature isn't being utilized.

Please be aware that disabling this process also disables the Offline Files feature, which is not supported on Home editions of Vista or Windows 7.

What Exactly Is Mobsync.exe?

Mobsync.exe is a process integral to Microsoft Sync Center and the Offline Files functionality.

It is typically associated with devices such as Windows Mobile phones utilizing ActiveSync, installations of SQL Server, or, in older versions of Internet Explorer (specifically IE 6, not IE7 or later), the synchronization of webpages for offline viewing. The process itself is not malicious and should not be deleted if you actively use these features.

You can access and manage its settings by launching Sync Center through the Control Panel.

When activated for use with Offline Files, the process becomes visible in the taskbar on both Vista and Windows 7 systems.

For users of Home editions of Vista or Windows 7, mobsync.exe may still appear in Task Manager. However, closing Sync Center should halt the process. If you previously used Sync Center and ActiveSync for mobile device management but no longer require it, uninstalling the ActiveSync software should also stop mobsync.exe from running.
