dpupdchk.exe: What Is It and Why Is It Running?

Understanding the dpupdchk.exe Process

Perhaps you've encountered the dpupdchk.exe process while reviewing your Task Manager, and are curious about its function. It often appears without a clear description and persistently restarts. This article aims to clarify its purpose.

This explanation is part of a series detailing various processes visible in Task Manager, including svchost.exe, dwm.exe, ctfmon.exe, mDNSResponder.exe, conhost.exe, rundll32.exe, Adobe_Updater.exe, and numerous others. Unfamiliar with these services? Further investigation is recommended!

What Exactly Is dpupdchk.exe?

This process appears to be an automatic update checker associated with Microsoft IntelliPoint, based on our analysis. However, the following steps detail how we arrived at this conclusion...

Initially, if you are operating on a Vista system, you can right-click the process and select "Open File Location."

This action will reveal the folder containing the file, allowing you to examine its properties. Regrettably, this particular process lacks any descriptive information within the properties dialog – a shortcoming on the part of Microsoft!

Further investigation involved examining the Windows registry. Utilizing the Process Monitor utility from Sysinternals, we determined that the process was querying a registry key labeled "Intellipoint Pro Auto Update"... a strong indication of its connection to some form of updating functionality.

Additionally, a shortcut with a similar icon exists in the Start menu, labeled "Check for Updates." This shortcut is unusual in that its target cannot be readily viewed... raising questions about the rationale behind such complexity.

To Microsoft: Should you be reviewing this article, providing clarification on its true function would be appreciated. Furthermore, improved documentation practices would be beneficial.

Removing the dpupdchk.exe Process

Important Note: Removing components of Microsoft software without a thorough understanding of their purpose is generally inadvisable and should not be undertaken lightly.

With that disclaimer in place, you have two options for addressing this process:

  • Uninstall IntelliPoint through the Control Panel (potentially losing advanced mouse features).
  • Replace the dpupdchk.exe file with a harmless dummy file.

Why a Dummy File?

Deleting the dpupdchk.exe file directly results in errors when accessing the mouse settings panel. To avoid these errors, we recommend substituting the original file with a benign executable that performs no action.

Navigate to the following directory (adjusting the path if your installation differs):

C:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliPoint

Rename the existing dpupdchk.exe file (using a tool like Take Ownership if necessary to gain permissions).

Replace the renamed file with this placeholder dpupdchk.exe file provided by How-To Geek. It is an empty executable, but feel free to scan it with multiple anti-virus engines for your peace of mind.

This concludes the story of the dpupdchk process. However, questions remain regarding processes like svchost.exe, jusched.exe, and dwm.exe. The exploration continues!
