Weedmaps Now Enables In-App Cannabis Purchases

Following adjustments to App Store policies by Apple, Weedmaps customers are now able to complete cannabis purchases directly through the application. This functionality allows users to browse selections, choose products, and arrange for either pick-up or delivery – all contained within the Weedmaps app.

Previously, the app’s capabilities were limited to displaying menus and locations of nearby retailers, a restriction stemming from Apple’s guidelines and both state and federal regulations.

Apple's Policy Shift

The updated application is currently available for download and use.

This development occurred after Apple broadened its App Store permissions to include certain cannabis-related applications. The new guidelines categorize licensed cannabis businesses under the same stipulations as licensed pharmacies.

This change permits platforms like Weedmaps, which catalog licensed cannabis operators, to integrate ordering features.

WM Technology's Response

“The integration of ordering capabilities within our iOS app represents a significant advancement, enhancing accessibility for both our clientele and our business partners,” stated Justin Dean, Chief Technology Officer at WM Technology, Inc.

“We recognize and appreciate companies such as Apple that collaborate with industry frontrunners to develop solutions that foster innovation within our sector. The evolving policies and perspectives surrounding cannabis are promising substantial growth, and we anticipate offering an even more streamlined method for ordering cannabis from retailers via our platform.”

Weedmaps' Unique Position

Weedmaps occupies a distinctive role within the cannabis market.

As a prominent cannabis application, it enjoys widespread usage across the nation.

Unlike direct delivery services, such as Eaze, Weedmaps functions solely as a platform, enabling licensed delivery services to showcase their products and services.

Geo-Restrictions and Policy Updates

Under the revised App Store regulations, applications like Weedmaps are required to restrict ordering to geographically defined areas where cannabis sales are legally permitted.

Consequently, users located in regions where cannabis sales are prohibited will be unable to order from dispensaries operating in legal jurisdictions.
